There could be different interpretations of what would be considered self defense but what are your general thoughts

A trap set up to catch someone, often people trespassing in ancient temples

But obviously you could have a more modern version

Can you give us examples? If I'm in a self defense situation stopping to prepare a booby trap for my house is horrible use of my time when I could just run, or get my self defense pistol.

Edit: You did right before I typed this, nevermind.

Putting bear traps and landmines in your yard.

The answer is no, there's no situation outside of Skyfall shit where setting up traps is self defense.

It would keep people from trying to break into my damn garage if i was allowed to rig up a shotgun to the window or put some bear traps under it.

Reason it isn't legal is your house isn't your own in that law enforcement and emergency services must be allowed un-booied trapped access at all times. Also to prevent someone innocent from getting caught in it like a little kid.

Imagine if your house caught fire and the fire department went in to stop the fire and hit a landmine or above poster shotgun trap.

Trap set up randomly in a public park or something: Most likely illegal

Traps set up in your house to catch robbers: Presumably legal

(There was actually an episode of Detective Conan/Case Closed about this, plus the recent topic with a similar story) Someone is stalking you, so you leave a poisoned drink behind expecting them to drink it as part of their stalking obsession. They drink it and die: ???

In this situation I was thinking more like youd boobytrap an out-of-the-way entrance to your house that might be vulnerable to robbers. Law enforcement and medical people would use the front door

I assumed this is stemming from the other topic about the Mom that got arrested (charged with injury to a child causing bodily injury) for "poisoning" her son's bully, who was stealing her son's drink at school every day, so she sent him in what a concoction of vinegar, salt, and lemon juice. Despite it basically being home made salad dressing, it supposedly made the kid so sick that he had to go to the hospital.

No, obviously not. Presumably it leads to lots of murder. Even in the case of a burglar. Someone simply stealing from you is not an active threat.

I understand that. And traps outside the house are pretty obviously always unjustifiable.
But it never sat right with me that burglars entering your house got such protections.
Like yeah... if you trap your house/door/etc... and it harms a legit emergency services person, through the book at you. But if your trap harms/kills someone breaking into your house or otherwise engaging in criminal activity... you should get a pass legally.
Yes, I know that would "encourage" setting up traps and thus endangering innocent people. I get why the laws are the way they are. But I really don't like it. It only ever seems to be prosecuted when people who deserve to get hit w/ the trap are, probably b/c the "what if" scenario is so rare.

If boobytrapping was in fact legal, I was assuming which instances of it would be legal and which wouldnt be. Placing a boobytrap in a public park probably wouldnt be legal no matter what

Im dense? Can you even read? Ive had to spell it out for you multiple times.

Someone asked for an explanation of what boobytrapping is. I gave three different examples, plus whether they would be considered legal or not assuming boobytrapping was allowed as suggested by the topic title. The first one would definitely be illegal. The second one would presumably be legal (depending on the details). For the last one, I really dont know.

Are you going to call me dense again or will you actually read my post this time?

What if theres a sign warning you that youll be blasted in the face with a shotgun if you open this door? I think a booby trap has to have the element of surprise. Otherwise its not really different from a fenced yard with a pitbull in it.
