Hopefully if the GOP ever dissolves the Democrats can split into the establishment and progressive, and let that be the new two party system. But right now the priority is getting rid of the GOP.

According to the article, the labor union accepted the exemption, and does Panera actually count as fast-food anyway? If bread is their main product, then it might be a worthy exemption.

Panera Bread is exempt from Californias $20 per hour minimum wage for fast food workers because of an exemption for chains that bake bread and sell it as a standalone item.

So I guess everyone is going to start advertising they sell their burger buns as a standalone item and dodge the new wage?

That's not how it works. The restaurant has to actually be making and baking their own bread, and sell it as a standalone item. AND "does not apply if the bread is available for sale solely as part of another menu item."

-- It shouldn't matter, if you're thinking only in terms of pure economics.
-- However, if it has to do with healthiness, and being able to secure sustainable food that doesn't rely on meat processing, I'd be on board with it. I honestly think it's because Panera considers themselves as fast-casual, and since they couldn't tailor the law to exempt fast-casual, they tried to find another way around it.

He's the future of the Democratic Party, though!

No one thinks the Democrats are perfect. Manchin and Sinema alone proved that. They have their share of rich assholes, and their share of war hawks. Its just that people rarely bring this up in a vacuum without some ulterior motive, usually a same thing both sides deflection from the fact that while the Democrats have plenty of assholes, the Republicans are universally assholes.

If you want to discuss how the Democrats can improve, there is room for that discussion.

So I looked into this, and I don't see him coming under fire from this. Maybe someone else can find this "fire".

I wondered what "top donor" meant. Which apparently doesn't mean shit. $100,000 to fight off the Republican recall, and nearly $65,000 for his reelection. Which is a lot of money, to me. But not to campaigns, it seems. To put it into some perspective, Reed Hastings (Netflix cofounder and CEO) donated $3.1 million to Newsom's recall defense.

If Newsom was actually trying to do what Flynn wanted, his carve out for Fast Casual or not doing this at all would have been the deal.

Chances are the problem will take care of itself. Panera will offer competitive pay or go under. That's the way it normally goes with greed. That, or they'll get by on an incredibly high turnover rate. I've a feeling many resumes in the future will have two to four months of experience at Panera Bread.

Just becasue the "other side's" policies are terrible, doesn't mean "our side's" bad policies can't be criticized.

It's like saying a football team shouldn't do anything to improve on it's 9-8 record becasue there's a team out there that went 2-15.

Maybe, I don't keep track or everyone's gimmick on here.

My point still stands. We have people on here bending over backwards to defend Panera of all places and how they're "not really fast food" because they bake their own bread and cookies.

My daughter's boyfriend works at Panera. 90% of their food is frozen or prepackaged when it is shipped to them. They're just as much a fast food joint as McDonalds or Burger King.

So Newsom bending the laws to help our his top donor screams backwashing, and should be criticized.

So he's shown himself to be a corporate stooge. You know ho you solve this? By voting for someone else in the primary. Don't snipe and don't despair. Just vote your conscience.

At this point, Whitmer and Pritzker (?!) are looking like better options.
