Nah, the PS1 was loaded with classic titles. That'd probably be one of the more competitive ones.

How about Mt. Rushmore of Monuments of the World? Stuff like the Great Pyramid of Giza, Great Wall of China, etc. Could be just still existing, or could extend to ones no longer around like the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.

So just wanted to address this real quick, to me a myth is something universally proven to be untrue while an urban legend has a kernel of truth to it that makes it more believable. Like I said it's a really fine line but I think there's a difference nonetheless.

I didn't want to start an argument in the main topic, but do the EGM April Fools' pranks really count as urban legends? I'm not saying an urban legend can't have an identifiable source, but if 90% of us could tell you exactly where they came from, that doesn't seem particularly "folkloric." I can't speak for the others because they were from before my time, but did Sonic and Tails being in Melee ever really get that divorced from the source?

I didn't know the Sonic and Tails thing came from there actually.

While we're on the subject, the reason I don't think the Madden Curse should count is because it's a superstition, like ghosts or something. For example, Nuclear Ghandi is very believable and in fact was implemented in later games. EA couldn't just decide to start including the Madden Curse. Also, it didn't affect the games themselves, it "affected" players in real life.

Maybe I misinterpreted the prompt but I don't feel like a curse on real life players is in the same vein as the other stuff.

Eh, I think people are splitting hairs making distinctions between urban legend, myth, and superstition. Like are they all the same thing? I guess not, but they share enough elements in common that I wouldn't dismiss something because of it. Blowing on cartridges, for example, could technically be considered all three.

I also maintain blowing on cartridges is to some extend true but maybe not everyone's was dusty enough for it be!

With stuff like Mew under the truck, Sonic in Melee, Nuclear Ghandi etc. you can actually try this stuff yourself in the game. Even the blowing in cartridges thing (which I also don't think really fits) you can try it and see if it actually works. But you can't test out the Madden curse, it was just a superstition people had. I think that's where the line is for me.

I agree. I feel like if people believed it, they didn't believe it long. Nuclear Ghandi is just one of those things I think people accepted without question. It was just an April's Fools joke, and I don't even remember ever hearing about Sonic being in Melee.

I vividly remember the sonic rumor spreading through the playground like wildfire. We'd come to school each day talking about how many kills we managed in cruel melee and the best strategies and such. It was a phenomenon!

I remember a bunch of stuff about Sonic in Melee, like if you put the game in Japanese and went to name entry, Sonic would show up as an autopick name eventually, which was supposed to be a hint or something. I remember spending like 10 minutes looking for it lol
