Wendys is clarifying what the company's CEO meant in a recent call with analysts when he said the fast-food chain plans to roll out dynamic pricing.

In mid-February, Kirk Tanner, the new CEO and president of Wendys, shared with analysts that they would be rolling out new plans to improve company profits, including digital menu boards that will be more easily able to change the prices of items, as well as testing dynamic pricing and daypart offers, according to Nations Restaurant News.

Tanner explained that they plan to invest about $20 million to roll out digital menu boards to all U.S. company-operated restaurants by the end of 2025 and approximately $10 million over the next two years to support digital menu board enhancements for the global system.

To clarify, Wendys will not implement surge pricing, which is the practice of raising prices when demand is highest. We didnt use that phrase, nor do we plan to implement that practice, a spokesperson said in an email to NBC News. They added there are no plans to raise prices at high-demand times.

We said these (digital) menu boards would give us more flexibility to change the display of featured items. This was misconstrued in some media reports as an intent to raise prices when demand is highest at our restaurants. We have no plans to do that and would not raise prices when our customers are visiting us most, the Feb. 26 statement reads. Any features we may test in the future would be designed to benefit our customers and restaurant crew members. Digital menu boards could allow us to change the menu offerings at different times of day and offer discounts and value offers to our customers more easily, particularly in the slower times of day.

A Wendys spokesperson had initially confirmed the digital menus, as well as dynamic pricing, in a Feb. 26 statement to TODAY.com, noting the company's future ability to change prices at different times of day. The initial statement did not say the fast-food chain would only lower prices with the new dynamic pricing model.

Sure.

I really hope the fast food market starts crashing. I went to Raising Canes the other day and saw the Caniac Combo for like 16 dollars. I remember it being $11 like 2 years ago.

Fast Food industry seriously needs to crash. People will save money and become healthier.

This is the key part. This means they are still going to do surge pricing, but frame it as lowering prices during slow times. (After raising prices across the board, they can discount it at slow times to the price it is now. )

doubtful they'll even go back about 6 years before prices really increased. wendy's is the last bastion for a reasonably priced meal deal at least for me.

fact: it costs 10$ for a crunchwrap supreme, a taco and a drink. (6$ at most was the old price).

Yep. Marketing spin at its best. A lot of discounts are like that already. The discounted price is just the normal price all along.

Not great... it's a shitty idea they should never have proposed, and they aren't rolling it back out of a sense of ethics or customer loyalty...

But they listened and they fixed the mistake.

I would think it was an actual mis-report. The business model of fast food doesn't really support surge pricing. Surge pricing exist to help offset demand so that a provider can keep up ( and with something like ride share it is also to entice more drivers to hop on ). In fast food they are most profitable when the store is slammed.because labor utilization is higher and a full parking lot/drive-thru acts as a limiting factor without needs to increase pricing.

If anything they would want to raise prices when it is slow, because that is when they are more likely to be losing money as labor costs are exceeding the revenue generated.

So is Wendys still doing the 2 for $6 deal that they used to have? I wanted to eat there yesterday, but I couldnt find the deal listed so I didnt go through. TBH, 2 for $6 was pushing it, but I swear that you can barely eat lunch (and actually fill up) for less than $10 now.

What was the actual quote from the initial statement? Because if clickbait journalists added the "surge pricing" terminology all on their own, that would be pretty egregious.

Beginning as early as 2025, we will begin testing more enhanced features like dynamic pricing and daypart offerings, along with AI-enabled menu changes and suggestive selling, he said. As we continue to show the benefit of this technology in our company-operated restaurants, franchisee interest in digital menu boards should increase, further supporting sales and profit growth across the system.

That was from the CEO. Also it was confirmed by spokespeople. It wasn't clickbait.

So you are under the assumption that Wendy's word game of "dynamic pricing" in which they "lower" food prices during low demand means it's not surge pricing?

If your food is more expensive during high volume times and lower during low volume times, it's surge pricing. Flavor it up all you want but it's the same thing.

But if it's discounted from the baseline rather than increased from the baseline, that's not a price increase.
