Most of social media is filled with bots.

Overtime all websites and traffic were condensed to major ones like Reddit, Twitter ect, smaller websites with smaller (more real) communities are rare or no longer exist

Google search results are algorithm controlled, boosting sites primarily for clicks. In those sites contain articles that arent even written by real people.

Bot farming, bot likes, bot accounts, bot followers.

It's probably one of the big reasons why I like CE. Smaller forums like this are filled with real people. And are not filled with garbage bots baiting for views.

I think for now. I believe social media will lead to a downfall of REAL traffic. More and more bots will begin to take over. It's one of the reasons why all my Facebook friends have privated their profiles, to protect themselves from hackers and data breaches.

Ive started to see this happen on Instagram too. More bots, and more people putting their profiles into protect. Soon we're going to see them divert to smaller communities and then social media will have its downfall.

Also AI will contribute to the dead internet theory. We have already seen this happen with accounts that act like real human beings. But do a bit of digging and you'll find something crazy.

There are already a lot of youtubers covering this phenomenon, looking into these accounts and all their posts.

Its affecting more than social media, most websites nowadays are owned by massive corporations which the majority of people flock to and use. Its condensed compared to before where there used to be so many gems out there to find.

I guess thats what happens when the masses use the net. It becomes commercialized.

it's actually insane how many bot accounts are on facebook. find some shitty video with like 10k likes, and all the comments are just variations of amazing, amazing, anzing, beautiful, amazig, baetiful, amzaing, beautiful, so beautiful, so amazging, etc. or like random nature picture pages posting AI pics, you can't tell at all if anything is real

I wouldn't guess most, but it's definitely a significant portion. this shit started 30 years ago, the bad guys get better at their work before the anti-virus people can deliver updates.

targeted marketing is public knowledge now, and it definitely changes the way different people see the internet

I can see where you're coming from with the dead internet theory. It's definitely true that there's a lot of bot activity on social media and that the algorithms of big platforms like Google can heavily influence what content we see. It's refreshing to be part of smaller, more authentic communities like this forum where real conversations can happen without the interference of bots. It's important to be aware of these issues and seek out spaces that prioritize genuine human interaction.

I certainly believe it, but definitely small scale. As soon as the Internet started condensing to a small number of sites, I figured it'd eventually devolve in to a marketing circle jerk with automated views and clicks in hopes of snagging real attention. Not quite that bad yet, but it's not far off.

I can't find it anymore but I remember reading a surprisingly convincing blog post that used Black Twitter as a prime example of the dead internet theory, where a significant amount of accounts + content are spambots and trolls; not to mention a number of tropes associated with that part of the internet started off from egregiously racist "parody" accounts in the early 2010s.

it's more than just that, really. it's the general idea that a significant amount of the content on the internet is generated by bots, and a significant amount of the activity of (seemingly) humans is also bots. I'm also willing to stretch the theory a little and include obviously fake spam media profiles as "bots" in this case (like when you have one guy simultaneously being 100 different people and posting like they're bots, but there's actually a real human behind it)

comment sections on anything popular that don't have good antibot measures in them somehow are like, useless

Years ago, around 2016 ish, I was stumbling upon entire forums where it was strictly AIs chatting with each other in odd manners. It was very likely going on for at least some years before that, and has no doubt become much, much worse since then. I completely subscribe to the theory.

It can be difficult to know whether or not a comment on the internet is genuine, especially when you see multiple comments that seem suspicious or unnatural.

If you're concerned about bots or spam, one thing to consider is the context of the comment. Is it relevant to the content of the video and in line with the general tone of the comments? Or does it seem out of place or unrelated?

Another thing to consider is the content of the comment itself. Does it use proper grammar and punctuation, or does it contain misspellings or other syntax errors? Are there any links or other suspicious elements in the comment?

Of course, even human-written comments can be misleading or even malicious, so it's always a good idea to be cautious and use your own best judgment when evaluating the content of a comment or any other online interaction.

So far (on YouTube anyway) the bot comments have a sexually suggestive avi, but I feel like that's used as a misdirect.

For proof of this, just go onto any news Twitter account (as an example BBC News) and click onto any tweet.

The comments are filled with blue checkmarks saying things like: "Wow", "Really, that's interesting", "Best wishes", "I can't believe it".

You know that they're all bots getting paid $0.001 per view, so it's probably some guy in India who registered about 1000 accounts and hopes to make some sort of profit based on Elon's genius idea to pay people to post on Twitter.

wasn't this one of the big fusses that happened when elon bought twitter? how the popularity of the site had been greatly overstated because a significant number of the "users" were actually just bots?

As weird as it probably sounds to say, this is kinda a backwards assumption. the text generation bots are trained on extremely massive amounts of english text, and are very very good at outputting correct english text. the place they might struggle is not the quality of the english and grammar, but rather the coherency of the text and its ideas, especially if the text is long-ish
