Something worse, I suspect. Another trans student was regularly bullied and then attacked in an act of corrective rape at the school restroom and was told by school staff to not make a big deal of it because it could ruin their attacker's life.

They also allege that the school did nothing about bullying in general and that they also ignored many pleas for help for a student who was self-harming; said student eventually committed suicide.

That it's the victims that are the perpetrators.

The rapist was apparently a teacher if I heard the linked video correctly. On that regularly subjected the maker to hateful slurs, the school refused to have the student reassigned despite the harassment, and the teacher tried to "cure" the student.

Regardless, I would bet everybody that ran to the attacker's defense would be super concerned about a trans person in the "wrong" bathroom for fear of exactly what happened to the trans student being perpetrated by the trans person. Without any actual evidence to back up their "conern."

The exact same thing that was done when it was reported to administration that the teacher was verbally abusing the same student. Nothing.

It's time to stop being soft on the little brats. Stop calling it "bullying" and giving it slaps on the wrist. Recognize it as assault and charge it accordingly.

It can be and is used for that. One of the good things about Twitter pre-Musk was that left-wing organizations and people were able to coordinate grassroot objectives over it. Now a Neo-Nazi is running the site who only wants to cater to other Neo-Nazis, so it's obviously hindered that.

That feels like a scramble now that this has made national headlines.

Whatever the case is it seems all spotlight needs to be shown on the school.

This is obviously a tragic and terrible situation. But there are a lot of inaccuracies in that article. The girls were not older, they were freshmen and complete strangers to nex. The fighting began when nex overheard the girls saying something rude about her and splashed them all with the water from their water bottle. Nex's friend tried to back them up to no avail. It was a fellow student who intervened, not a teacher.

There's a bodycam video out of nex's interview with the police while they were at the hospital. This is all stuff they said. I'm not trying to downplay the severity of this situation. I stand with nex and I just wanted their truth to be heard.

Also please dont murder me but apparently the police have reported that nex's cause of death wasn't due to the injuries from the fight. What else it could be, I have no idea. I havent seen anything other than that about what could have happened. It doesn't sound very believable, though.

It sounds like that whole town is pretty corrupt so I wouldn't be surprised if the cops are trying to do a cover up

Nex was also apparently denied care at the urgent care their parents took them to, which seems to have been in contact with the school resource officer, and had collapsed before their follow up the next day and had to be rushed to the ER.

Apparently that is the ME's initial findings, and they are waiting on toxicology to establish cause of death.

It looks like the family are going to have a second autopsy done privately. Given the way the authorities are handling this, that seems like a very good idea.

Authorities havent ruled out that a fight at school could have contributed to the death of Nex Benedict, a 16-year-old transgender student whose case has drawn international media attention.

Owasso police said in a statement last week that preliminary information from the medical examiners office indicated that Benedict did not die as a result of trauma. The police department added that further comments on Benedicts cause of death were pending until toxicology results are released.

Some community members and others on social media took the departments statement to mean that any potential injuries Benedict sustained from the fight didnt cause his death. However, Lt. Nick Boatman, a police spokesperson, told NBC News on Tuesday that that wasnt what the statement was intended to mean.

We did not interpret that in any way, he said of the word trauma, which he said was used by the medical examiners office. He said that the medical examiners office didnt say it had ruled out the fight as causing or contributing to Benedicts death and that people shouldnt make assumptions either way.

Maybe if you read the article, you will understand better. Many people have been misgendering him, and this is super common for trans people early in transition and/or trans kids to be frequently misgendered.

I read it before my first post and it says nothing about why they switched pronouns. Apparently he used both he/him and they/them pronouns.

Ally, who uses they/them pronouns and asked to go by only their first name to protect their privacy, said in an interview that they were close friends with Nex.
It was one of those things where you meet them and you automatically feel like youve known them for years kind of thing, Ally said Sunday before a vigil for Nex, whom they met at the start of the school year. They were such an adventurous little thing. It was never really a dull moment with them.

Ally said Nex primarily went by he/him pronouns at school but also used they/them pronouns, which Nex's family also used. Several other friends said Nex preferred he/him pronouns.

Right now it still looks like he died from head injuries sustained from the attack, and likely had some internal bleeding in the brain. People can get these kinds of injuries and feel fine for a day, then collapse dead later as the bleeding continues. There are numerous accounts of this happening, and why it's so important to get checked by a doctor after a head injury or concussion.

That would need to be prosecuted with some kind of murder charge, like gross indifference to life resulting in negligent homicide or manslaughter.

Even if (and I really want to emphasize the "if" part) a sufficient causal connection or intent can't be shown to prove murder, it is still a terrible assault. There's no excuse if the police haven't done anything with this.
