When I was younger, it seemed like people gave more of a shit about making the customer happy.

These days, I often times get nasty attitudes from cashiers if I have an issue or I need a refund or something.

They dont give a single fuck about being rude.

OK, so heres the reason I made this topic.

My dad is a medical marijuana patient.

So I went to the dispensary to get him his stuff (cartridges).

The other day he told me that one of the cartridges are broken, so I told him Id take it back and get a replacement for him.

I get there, the cashier immediately shuts me down and says they have a strict 48 hour return policy.

I think this is unreasonable, because there was no way for him to know that the product was defective until he opened it and tried to use it.

Long story short, the cashier ends up cussing me out and calling me a racial slur.

Unbelievable experience. But this seems to be the norm.

Theres just no sense of customer service anymore.

Ok, and who says you weren't being rude first? Sounds like you started arguing with them and blaming them for the policy.

Employees don't typically start cussing people out unless they are difficult first.

Also factor in that you don't know what kind of day they have had or the people they were dealing with before you. Shitty moods tend to spread when misery loves company.

How are you gonna say a customer cant return a defective product after 48 hours?

That is absolutely ludicrous especially when each of those things are like $70.

And again, there is no way for us to know that it was broken until my dad picked that one out to use it.

Its just asinine.

My dad literally tells me that getting anything returned to retail stores were much harder to do back then than it is today because they would always get you on the "technicality's". It wasn't until Amazon became more laxed on the return policies did most other retail stores follow suit. Also the customers that tend to be the most entitled are the boomer and gen xers because most of them probably never worked in a customer service job and always have the "the customer is always right" mentality.

Used to be you could return unused stuff in the US even without a receipt, but then customers started abusing it, like stealing stuff and wanting a refund. Now packaging is more complicated to stymie people using something then putting it back in the box for a refund.

Thats irrelevant because they sold me something that was broken.

There should not be a time limit to return something like that.

They just lost thousands of dollars of business over 60 bucks.

Im gonna send an email to their corporate staff, so hopefully they take action on these jerks.

Yeah don't get me wrong, the policy did need to use some work but my point was that back then they made returns into a huge hassle in comparison to what we have now (even though about 40%-60% of returned Amazon orders get trashed).

Wasnt even my product.

It was for my dad who is a medical patient.

Not very reasonable to expect someone to open multiple packages and try every single one to make sure it works.

There should be an assumption that it works when you pay for it dude and if it doesnt work, they should either replace it or give you a refund.

Thats the right way to do business.

48 hour return policy is ridiculous and I'm pretty sure people are only defending it because TC's topics suck

This. It's a two way street of BS. I've seen it on the retail department store side, and from an exponentially larger construction side where customers will try to get out of tens of thousands of dollars for something we sometimes find they caused. Some of those customers pull the "customer card" like the "race card".

It's also not reasonable for the cashier to go against policy. If they don't like the return window, they can find somewhere else that better suits their needs to do their business or plan more careful next time. I'd obviously also reprimand the cashier if I was in charge of them.

I will admit that I lost my temper.

I started off, mentioning how my dad told me about the broken cart.

Then the cashier cut me off and said oh, so your dad bought it? as if to shut me down right there and I cant return it unless I purchased it.

Well, I was the one who purchased it.

So at that point, I start to get pissed off because hes just trying to brush me off.

I told him not to give me a hard time about this.

He says Im not the manager.

Then I say, all right, then go get them.

At this point, the cashier was already cussing me out.

As someone who worked customer service for a long time, Its a few things

You have underpaid, Overworked, and usually understaffed employee's who are almost always being shit on from all sides.
You have Managers who don't ever really want to help out, wont Interfere when there is an angry unruly customer and will leave their employee's out to suffer the brunt of the angry customers wrath for as long as they can
and a lot of customers who expect everything to go their own way, expect no inconveniences and expect the person to know everything, be able to authorize everything

I will always tell this to people, If your being an asshole, Don't expect the Employee to go out of his way to help you or be willing to stretch the rules to help you because stretching the rules can get them in trouble
