Police said Alexander Nicholas Fanjul, 38, became irate after he was seated next to a gay couple at a steakhouse in Palm Beach, Florida, last weekend. The Palm Beach Police Department (PBPD) rushed to a home on El Dorado Lane at around 11.30pm on January 28 after a person called 911 to report a woman screaming. When officers arrived, they found Fanjul - who is the eldest son of Alexander Fanjul Sr., a director and senior vice president of Florida Crystals, a company growing raw cane sugar in the US - "standing over a female subject" who was "on the floor in a defensive fetal position and observed to be bleeding from the facial area." According to the arrest report, an officer heard the victim say: "Get off of me." The victim, who told the police she had been dating Fanjul for about a year and a half, said he assaulted her and she thought she was going to die, according to Law & Crime. It is alleged that while the pair were having dinner at the Flagler Steakhouse in Palm Beach, Fanjul was frustrated as the couple sitting next to them were homosexual - and his frustration culminated before they returned home. The affidavit said: "While at dinner, Fanjul initially became irate because the two were seated next to a homosexual couple at the restaurant. Fanjul voiced his frustration to (the victim) at the restaurant, becoming increasingly irate. (The victim) further stated that when the two arrived at Fanjuls residence, Fanjul became increasingly irate and continued to speak about his frustration with the restaurant." The police wrote that when they were returning home, the victim told Fanjul to drop the subject. At that point, he punched her with a closed first causing "bruising, bleeding and swelling to her facial area". Officers added that the victim said Fanjul continually "kneed her in the face" which caused her "substantial pain". Fanjul also removed the victim's purse from her shoulder, the affidavit said. After the victim said she would call the police, Fanjul allegedly grabbed her hand and smashed it and the phone on the ground, causing the device to break. The victim said she began to scream for help and at that point Fanjul allegedly "threw her to the ground and forcibly dragged her inside of the residence to prevent her from receiving aid or escaping." The woman said that once inside the house, the attacker used both his hands to strangle her around the neck. Officers said they noticed marks on her neck and also a trail of blood on the floor, with many objects being knocked over and thrown to the floor. Fanjul was arrested on Monday on charges that include domestic battery by strangulation, robbery, false imprisonment, and cocaine possession.
