lol @ disdain for the "casuals". A difficult final fantasy game does not exist. You walk through the game pressing confirm and maybe use an item or esuna every few fights (or every fight if it's a shitty gimmick like the ff4 sylph cave). If you're timesinking hours into grinding any FF game in existence you're already a baddie in the first place or just maxing out the jobs for fun or doing bestiary challenges like spending an hour trying to spawn warmech in FF1 so who cares.

So? Most of the trophies are either lame timesink grinds that require 30+ hours of walking back and forth and slamming the confirm button in the same area against the same enemies to get to the level cap, or are 100% bestiary/treasure completion where the grind absolutely does not matter. Does spending 4x longer doing that (say, for ff5 level 99 and all jobs maxed) destroy the integrity of the game?

ff2's magic growth was a problem. like, you shouldn't have to cast something 800 times to get it to half of its potential.

yeah classic FF2 was a failed experiment. In theory you would be able to do stuff like high str/con white mages and have archetypes closer to tabletop fantasy games, but in practice it just sucked and was a chore to play, especially for characters intended to be hybrids like RDM-style.

Yeah, I don't care for them either. I usually liked the extra content and having more of a post-game to do. People who didn't like it could just... not do it.

iirc the secret to making casters not suck in magic skill was to make sure they just used rod breaks in combat every round instead of fight or def. whitemages get black magic staves super early too and I don't think using them reduced spirit

Tbh: if these go on a good sale ill still get them. The most ive seen is 20%.

I slam em but at the right price turning on speed up and multipliers for some trophies is worth it.

in the nes version the trick was to level them up using the bug that let you powerlevel by canceling out of casts.

i mean, be real, you're not casting that shit eight hundred times.

there's also the problem of magic interference, which is just a thing that just about all the gear has.

I think overall they're really good. I loved the remixed scores, rebalancing on certain mechanics, most of the spritework and the big one is honestly QoL changes. Theres like a zillion little things that add up compared to the classic versions that just makes it a smoother run on replays, and having the whole collection standardized on stuff like cursor memory options/autobattle/settings in one place without messing with pulling out a slew of consoles is a really nice thing.

I'm one of those weird people who goes back to them every 5 or 6 years and pixel remaster is definitely my preferred way to do stuff like the four job fiesta every few years now.

I think I probably did lol. My casters were on rod duty 90% of the time when I played the FF origins version of II. I *think* that had the classic NES mechanics. I remember losing stats a lot at any rate

E: It had worse spell growth than NES after checking, but no magic penalty for gear I guess? Its been awhile.

Im annoyed they delisted the mobile version. I have it and like it but why delist it? It was good for the option to have a version with many qol improvements, a new look and the bonus content.

So when someone bitched about the bonus content not being in the pixel remasters you could tell them to go get the mobile version...

Edit: Seems theres ways to still get the mobile version now. I havnt checked in a while....

lol, i'll get right on that.

hey, what's your issue with casuals?

My casters were on rod duty 90% of the time when I played the FF origins version of II.

i think you may have been using the mage's rod, which you can get too early. it casts bolt 5. also hits a lot harder than most of the available weapons.

Yeah, that checks out. I remember it being a bolt based weapon that I used to save spellslots. I've only played FF2 twice because...well, I really just don't like ff2 much. The PR version was definitely a more fun experience for me though.

i like ff2 for how broken it is. there's lots of shit you can just try.

looks like tc isn't going to answer me about his weird aggression towards casuals.

one thing i wanted to do in ff2 was see if i could get through without leveling HP, just surviving on defense, and defense from magic. unfortunately the nes version was super fuckin bugged

Casuals are great. I love casuals. They should casualize every game. Like make easy modes for souls games.

Some extra content is weaker than the main game, but still very much welcome. I've never been particularly enthralled by graphics updates so pixels don't really work for me.
