You're supposed to go a bit faster when passing. Am I missing some nuance?

In my state, at least, you can't speed in order to pass.

You shouldn't be passing somebody who's going the speed limit.

the logic falls apart in this respect unless passing is reserved only for instances like someone going 40 in 55, but if you try to pass people like 54 or 53 in 55, then you are just making the road DANGEROUS for the sake of ticket fear and that is shameful

Kinda crazy how many people are this ignorant. They are afraid of cops pulling them over for breaking the speed limit apparently but at the same time not content enough to stay in the slow lane.

the law is you are to be passing in the passing lane not hanging out

also many places what you call the law isn't really the law
as in there are places if the limit says 60 you can go 65 24/7 even with cop beside you and in front of you and never get a ticket
and sometimes that is the slower speed of the road (which is why you don't get ticketed partially)

Fyi the purpose of speed laws are really just for road saftey
the idea that "I can never ever break 55! and should never!" is counter to the spirit of safety

but of course if you live in a place where they are ticketing all the time for the most minor infractions like 1mph over it then it is more understandable but then maybe in these places you should just...not pass ?

basically to be a truly safe driver you should be paying attention always and adjust based on roadway conditions

someone who foregoes all that and says "only speed limit ever" is not a safe driver

I can relate to that. While I didn't get pulled over, I did get a speeding ticked mailed to me because a street camera clocked me at going 36mph(This is NY where we get a mere 25 mph speedlimit with a +10 grace allowance according to traffic)

And in some cases those cops will go on public record stating that you can be ticketed for driving the speed limit in those places as you create an unsafe condition for those around you. So you better be going 80-85 mph there to avoid it.

in what state are the majority, or even a noticeable amount, of drivers going the speed limit? everywhere I've been, the norm seems to be 5 over, with a lot of people doing 10 or more. i've driven past countless state highway patrol officers going 10 over and haven't gotten pulled over for it, ever.

i sure hope all you guys who are so strict about the speed limit stay all the way over to the right.

Speeding up to pass makes sense, within reason. But otherwise if I'm just in the slow lane and people are on my ass when I'm going the speed limit is infuriating. Or I'm going 10 over in the fast lane and they are still on my ass.

I'm fine with people going the speed limit or even slower on the slow lanes. Just don't do it on the fast/passing lane.

The real mistake is referring to them as speed limits

But let me mention. You go the limit in the rightmost lane.
An idiot tries to pass you going the limit or barely above it.
Guess what happens? People will get on your tail and you are innocent.
This is why passing quickly is important. You become a victim of a stupid passer.

and it is not your job to enforce the speed limit. i've heard people argue things like "I'm going the speed limit and nobody should be going faster than that anyway, so they have no reason to pass me or to expect me to go faster". bitch, it is NOT your job to patrol the roads. STFU and GTFO.

Ive never got this. Its called the speed LIMIT. When did it become the minimum instead of the maximum ? Its just stupid to me. Seems like that should be the most you can go

The speed limit is the maximum. But you still can't sit in the passing lane if there's a line of cars building up behind you. Move over and let them deal with their speeding tickets.

I want to talk about shopping carts in the passing lane, and how they should be in the right lane OR a cart return. But not a cart return in the passing lane.

The number of times I've barely beaten a red light - and conversely the number of times I've just barely gotten caught by a red light thanks to some dullard clogging up the left lane - carries far more weight than whatever shame I might feel over passing someone only to see them again at the next light. And I only go 10, maybe 15 mph over the limit when passing, which is well within the normal flow of traffic for my area.

the limit is just protection from tickets and is "supposed" to have been calculated as the safe speed

in most places no calculation was done and it was just randomly thrown on the road by someone not very bright and everyone ignores it because it is not the safe socialized speed

if you break the limit you can always get a ticket

but that doesn't mean go under is the safe speed and it is often not

some places going under the limit is literally going to threaten your life and you should be able to determine this if you are a good driver

anyways my discussion here is as passing exceeding the limit for a very brief amount of time in many cases (not always) is actually the safest move
you pass quickly and get back over and go the limit

The worst is people going 10mph or more under the speed limit on the highway. No you're not being cautious and safe you are backing up traffic and being more dangerous than a speeder. Sometimes ill lay down the horn for an extended period.

to explain further

in some places the limit is not intended to make cars drive at it
for example a limit of 60mph isn't to make sure every car is going 60mph

but rather they fully expect people to surpass it and want to LIMIT how much it is surpassed

example, if limit is 60 and people go 80 in the left lane
if limit was 70 those people would be going 90
so they set it at 60 to reduce those people from 90 to 80

I literally read an article about this last night as a place discussed raising the speed limit on lower end like to 75 mph and the argument was people would go 100 and that is dangerous so they didn't want to raise the limit to 75

basically the threat of a ticket is stronger than the actual giving of a ticket is the point
