You're supposed to go a bit faster when passing. Am I missing some nuance?
In my state, at least, you can't speed in order to pass.

You shouldn't be passing somebody who's going the speed limit.

if your state is super strict about it then sure you shouldn't pass then

so the question is do you? do you pass someone going 54 at 55?

are you this guy?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYvI_pOF8BA

or do you adjust then to 54 ?

the logic falls apart in this respect unless passing is reserved only for instances like someone going 40 in 55, but if you try to pass people like 54 or 53 in 55, then you are just making the road DANGEROUS for the sake of ticket fear and that is shameful

If the speed limit is 55 and the guy in front of me is going 54, I'd just go 54.

Ah. In my state, I think the left lane's supposed to go 5-10mph. Anything else is technically illegal, including going slower.

Kinda crazy how many people are this ignorant. They are afraid of cops pulling them over for breaking the speed limit apparently but at the same time not content enough to stay in the slow lane.

Well turns out they will get tickets for that in certain places. Don't be like them:

Are you suggesting more people break the law, sir?

the law is you are to be passing in the passing lane not hanging out

also many places what you call the law isn't really the law
as in there are places if the limit says 60 you can go 65 24/7 even with cop beside you and in front of you and never get a ticket
and sometimes that is the slower speed of the road (which is why you don't get ticketed partially)

infact there IS precedence when SPEEDING is REQUIRED for you to NOT break the law

https://www.sacbee.com/news/california/article277636233.html

Is it OK to break the speed limit to keep up with traffic? What California law says

Regardless of the posted speed limit, drivers should adjust their speed depending on surrounding driving factors. According to the California Driver Handbook, these factors include: The speed of other vehicles, the number of vehicles on the road, road surface conditions, the presence of bicyclists or pedestrians, weather conditions and traffic congestion Henning Mortensen, owner of Bond Driving School, said there is a reasonable expectation to go faster or slower than the speed limit in certain situations. These situations include bad weather conditions, safely entering a freeway or overpassing a vehicle, like a semi truck.

Based on what Mortensen said, going the speed of traffic is considered a safe practice but is subject to the fines of speed violations. The rule is if the speed of traffic is violating the speed limit posted or implied prima facie speed law in the current situation, you should move to the furthest right lane and maintain a safe and legal speed, Mortensen said. If cars behind or around you are driving faster than the speed limit, you should move to the right to avoid traffic congestion. If drivers would maintain a constant speed and a consistent distance at all times, congestion would not occur, Mortensen said. Tailgating, constant lane changes and drivers going different speeds creates congestion on the road.

Fyi the purpose of speed laws are really just for road saftey
the idea that "I can never ever break 55! and should never!" is counter to the spirit of safety

but of course if you live in a place where they are ticketing all the time for the most minor infractions like 1mph over it then it is more understandable but then maybe in these places you should just...not pass ?

basically to be a truly safe driver you should be paying attention always and adjust based on roadway conditions

someone who foregoes all that and says "only speed limit ever" is not a safe driver

also just an fyi

legality varies

https://www.directauto.com/learning-center/driving-laws-and-safety/going-over-speed-limit-when-passing

Is speeding legal when passing other cars?
Some states allow drivers to speed when passing slow vehicles. But, how fast can you go over the speed limit? It varies, but sometimes, when overtaking another car, you are allowed to exceed the speed limit by 10-15 mph. Typically, this applies to two-lane highways where the posted speed limit is 55 mph or higher. Some states that allow this are Idaho, Wyoming, Minnesota, and Washington.
Most states don't explicitly allow speeding, regardless of the situation. However, some police officers exercise discretion, allowing drivers to exceed the speed limit by a few miles per hour when passing (under certain circumstances).

However while the law may vary the safety does not

impeding traffic is simply dangerous

I can relate to that. While I didn't get pulled over, I did get a speeding ticked mailed to me because a street camera clocked me at going 36mph(This is NY where we get a mere 25 mph speedlimit with a +10 grace allowance according to traffic)

And in some cases those cops will go on public record stating that you can be ticketed for driving the speed limit in those places as you create an unsafe condition for those around you. So you better be going 80-85 mph there to avoid it.

in what state are the majority, or even a noticeable amount, of drivers going the speed limit? everywhere I've been, the norm seems to be 5 over, with a lot of people doing 10 or more. i've driven past countless state highway patrol officers going 10 over and haven't gotten pulled over for it, ever.

i sure hope all you guys who are so strict about the speed limit stay all the way over to the right.

The number of times I've barely beaten a red light - and conversely the number of times I've just barely gotten caught by a red light thanks to some dullard clogging up the left lane - carries far more weight than whatever shame I might feel over passing someone only to see them again at the next light. And I only go 10, maybe 15 mph over the limit when passing, which is well within the normal flow of traffic for my area.

the limit is just protection from tickets and is "supposed" to have been calculated as the safe speed

in most places no calculation was done and it was just randomly thrown on the road by someone not very bright and everyone ignores it because it is not the safe socialized speed

if you break the limit you can always get a ticket

but that doesn't mean go under is the safe speed and it is often not

some places going under the limit is literally going to threaten your life and you should be able to determine this if you are a good driver

anyways my discussion here is as passing exceeding the limit for a very brief amount of time in many cases (not always) is actually the safest move
you pass quickly and get back over and go the limit

to explain further

in some places the limit is not intended to make cars drive at it
for example a limit of 60mph isn't to make sure every car is going 60mph

but rather they fully expect people to surpass it and want to LIMIT how much it is surpassed

example, if limit is 60 and people go 80 in the left lane
if limit was 70 those people would be going 90
so they set it at 60 to reduce those people from 90 to 80

I literally read an article about this last night as a place discussed raising the speed limit on lower end like to 75 mph and the argument was people would go 100 and that is dangerous so they didn't want to raise the limit to 75

basically the threat of a ticket is stronger than the actual giving of a ticket is the point
