They sold it in 2011 for $722k

Thankfully they werent as Boomer as the average person born in the late 40s and early 50s and understood how fucked future generations are

When my dad left college he was offered 5 or 6 jobs outta the gate without applying for anything.

He got to cherry pick the best one and use other jobs as leverage for higher pay. Then he was able to buy a house at a reasonable price (On just his salary)

And I'm not knocking my dad because he was a smart guy but that's no longer the reality people of my generation lived in let alone what the new generation currently live in.

Even if they did finish HS or college, they (mostly, IMO) have the notion that things like science, knowledge and the value of a dollar are static. They feel like they learned all they need to know about them by ~ 1970.

The fact that these things change and in fact changed so quickly is inconceivable and/or frightening to a lot of them.

I mean, if we could get UBI and a good social safety net (health care etc.) guaranteed for all citizens, along with employees being free to unionize, then I think scrapping minimum wage and "letting the market decide" could work.

But as long as one side literally needs the job to survive and the other side can treat employees as an easily replaced, expendable resource, the idea that just letting them negotiate would lead to the best outcome for everyone is sheer lunacy.

Your dad made more money in real dollar value than minimum wage is now in some places, and ALSO way more when accounting for inflation.

What's really frustrating is the entire GQP also pretend they don't understand inflation and purchasing power.

Dude my mom got her first house in the late 90s for 89.5k. Sold it in the early ought for 235k. Bought a new place for 330k then sold that 5 years ago for 625k.

Shit is insane.

Also the person who bought her house did some big renovation to the basement and added a deck and sold it for 895k so... that's the world we live in. 2 years and some significant but not super expensive renovations and she made 270k off that.

Every single older person I know says it really wasn't easy even for them, but the world was much more harsh and parents often times kicked kids out asap. They all said wages were just as shit then as they are now, and you gotta really make something of yourself with a skill to get by, not bag groceries.

So what's up with this discrepancy?

Using the same calculator that TC used...

https://iili.io/JBl9PDv.png

To be making wages back then that were "just as shit" as they are now, those old people would have to have been making less than $2 an hour, which would have been well below the actual legal minimum wage of that time period.

https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/minimum-wage/history/chart

So in other words, those people you're talking to are either stupid, full of shit, or some combination of both.

Money did legitimately go further back then as we werent completely screwing the poor as badly. So it would have been significantly easier to be poor and accumulate wealth back then.

You can sort of tell that based on how far off most minimum wage jobs are from that calculated $33.04/hr. But theres a lot more factors.
