I dunno nextdoor says it's a lot more dangerous and has the videos to prove it!

But it's really dangerous out there and there are so many thieves unlike 20 years ago. Just go on nextdoor and look at all the videos of kids and adults stealing entire bowls of candy (including the bowl)

It's almost like video doorbells are a recent thing

Mind posting a few, so we know what to look out for?

Wouldn't be surprised if the housing crisis affects some areas. Entire subdivisions that were full of young families 30 years ago when they could afford to buy homes eventually replaced with mostly empty nesters refusing to leave, making it a dead zone for youth activities.

I had a fun season, but I had to work for it. I had to go out of my way to find a theater that was showing anything. I also despise the capitalist ingenuity of having genuine Christmas decorations on the same shelf as The Nightmare Before Christmas decorations. "Since you're already celebrating Christmas before Halloween..."

If you moved Halloween to September 30th, stores would stock Beachside Santas for the 4th of July. There's no keeping ahead of it.

I think there are several factors to it.

First millennials just aren't having kids as frequently or early as previous gens. So there are just fewer kids.

Also, childless millennials are more likely to be celebrating Halloween with friends. Like several of my friends and I all just hung out and watched scary movies. So instead of 5 houses handing out candy, it was just the one we all hung out at.

So less kids, less houses participating and those feed into each other.

I passed out candy at my mom's, a favor I traditionally do for her, and there was 20 kids who came, at the most.

This is the first tradition I actually kind of care about seeing wane like this. Perhaps it's a leftover feeling from my former conservative self or perhaps I just remember how much fun it was as a kid, but admittedly it does bum me out a little.

Having said that, as someone who talks about how society moves forward and things that used to be popular naturally become outdated & irrelevant, I can't say I'm gonna kick and scream that we have to keep trick or treating around. If it goes then so be it, however I will not be happy when it does.

Actual statistics show crime at decades long down-slopes with a spike around the Pandemic for obvious reasons... but the far right love to use fear of crime and individual anecdotes and stories to call for more police state crackdowns on the poor and working class... especially people of color.

Nah more like trick r treating is dying in low income neighborhoods is all. Trunk or treat replaced that for some people. There is still trick r treating in more higher income areas. Theres still a good influx of haunted houses and Halloween events every year too.

Im surprised more people arent sad about this. Trick or treating was such a special memory as a kid.

It's one of things I can say was better for me in my childhood than what kids have now. I remember being out for hours until the lights went out. Walking all over town with my best friend and then staying over at his house or him staying at mine.

Of course there was also something to be said for grabbing a couple bags of candy and chips and a case of soda and just chilling out with your friends and playing video games all night and not having to go out.

I don't know if its dying, but I had a medical appointment late Halloween night and the amount of houses that don't decorate is alarming. At least 50 in a row and what few did decorate it was piss poor Christmas lights that were orange.

It honestly pisses me off because growing up the neighborhoods I went to actually gave a shit about decorating. I couldn't decorate myself as I was broke, but I would have if I could afford it.

The most telling sign its messed up is that my aunt who literally lives 2 streets down from us got 8 trick or treaters while we got 130. I used to live on her street and most Halloweens I would get at most 1. So despite buying a big box of chips and cans of soda no one would show up, all because there was a divide between our streets.

Halloween won't die but trick or treating will and that's fine since it's just another bastardized commercial holiday at this point.

For kids? Maybe.... It used to be packed in my neighborhood when I was a kid. Now? Got back from work in Halloween night and barely only 3 houses were giving out candies...

I'm a delivery driver and noticed the lack of decorations. yet, there are some neighborhoods that went full out crazy. i was still delivering around 5-7PM and there wa s a bunch of kids and adults in one massive community. Felt the Halloween spirit as they gave me candies too. Felt nice haha.

For adults, there's partying and horror nights in Theme parks. I've been to horror nights 3 years in a row so far. yet, never been to a party or event.

Australia will probably beat you to that punch. Were doing our best to emulate the US in all the worst ways.

When I was younger we could go trick or treating even without our parents once we hit like twelve. And there was a kid I was friends with who lived at the bottom of the street whose parents always made everyone fresh donuts.

Yeah that sounds crazy as fuck looking back. I'm so damn lucky to have been born late enough to get shit like the internet and modern video games but early enough to have things like waterslides at the beach and actual trick or treating and no school shootings and also I'll probably be dead of old age before climate change burns the world to a crisp.

I got really cynical somewhere along the line there.

It sucks no kids come trick or treating anymore. More candy for me I guess but it's sad to see it dying out.

Why would kids trick or treat for one night when they can go to Trunk or Treats though out the last two weeks of October. Really I get like twenty kids coming to my house but I did a Trunk or Treat at a bowling alley/arcade and passed out candy to hundreds of children.

it used to actually be about the costumes and walking door to door. Now its just about candy gathering efficiency
