I didnt want Phoenix Force altogether so of course the Nico variant was the last card I got. Iron Lad seems like a strong card so its no surprise him and Darkhawk are almost never in these spotlights while guys like Knull almost have what 4-5 Spotlight variants already?

Weird interaction today, turns out that Klyntar will still merge Prof X into a symbiote. It makes sense I guess because it's not being destroyed but that feels like it shouldn't happen.

Today I learned Shadow King does fuck all to Knull though. He was a random draw from a location and I lost, but now I know

But all of knull's power (and others like darkhawk and devil dino) all come from his ongoing, which shadow king does nothing about.

It's entirely based around if they have variants ready to go or not, and almost nothing else. Knull already had like 5 unreleased variants datamined when the spotlights became a thing, thus he was used often. You'll notice all the cards that haven't been in the spotlight also have little to no variants. SD doesn't plan ahead or thoroughly think anything through before making changes and that's how we've gotten to where we are.

I saw a Reddit thread about the dev team claiming there are still some archetypes that have seemingly gone undiscovered by the community at large. I decided to revisit my opponent discard idea and after some tinkering have created an apparent monstrosity.

Opponent discard/Darkhawk is an unintuitive combo that works well together.

Korg/Black Widow/Moon Knight/Silver Samurai/Black Bolt/America Chavez or Doctor Doom is a devastating game. And the whole Darkhawk core makes a powerful alternative. Black Widow supports both archetypes well.

I've received several "I don't believe you" reacts upon my opponent reaching turn 6 with 1 card in hand. I kind of hope this archetype does not spread, because it would be terrible to face on a regular occasion. Of course, the discard path completely collapses when the opponent is playing an Apocalypse deck.

Worse, I'm still tinkering and might be missing an obvious inclusion; I am inexplicably not running Stature after finding myself rarely playing her.

Mobius and Wave just got decimated in the latest patch.

Mobius M. Mobius
  • [Old] 2/3 - Ongoing: Your Costs can't be increased. Your opponent's Costs can't be reduced.
  • [New] 2/3 - On Reveal: Until the end of next turn, your Costs can't be increased and your opponent's Costs can't be reduced.
Developer Note: Mobius M. Mobius has had a massive impact on the metagame, forcing a changing of the guard among top decks that saw perennial powerhouses like Zabu, Sera, and Death fall from grace in favor of decks that could push Power by just playing cards for their normal Energy Costs. While we were eager to see the world Mobius would create, we expected to make an adjustment down the road in order to welcome Cost reduction strategies back into the sunlight. Today is that day, as we're shifting Mobius to provide a temporary counter that requires good timing to maximize the effect. This makes him trickier to set aside Energy for, kind of like Shadow King, and also opens up counters like Magik for decks that are hyper-vulnerable to Mobius being played on turn 5. We're also interested to hear your feedback on our approach here, using a new card as a tool to create a new play environment temporarily.

Wave
  • [Old] 3/3 - On Reveal: All cards cost 4 until the end of next turn.
  • [New] 3/5 - On Reveal: All cards cost a maximum of 4 until the end of next turn.
Developer Note: This is a change we've been sitting on for a while, but we didn't want to introduce such a shake-up to the metagame during a time when Wave was an important balance tool for managing specific matchups. However, the combination of Loki, Mobius, and Alioth have all led to Wave seeing play in more decks than just ones looking to slow the game down and play big cardswe're seeing a lot more decks get ahead, then use Wave to slam the door. Since that's explicitly not what we want for Wave, the timing seemed right for this adjustment. Wave will no longer increase card Costs at all, just reduce cards that cost 5 or more to a maximum of 4. Because this effect is beneficial to both players, we're improving her from 3/3 to 3/5. This change is certainly a nerf to Wave in some strategies, and we'll look at their performance to evaluate future buffs.

Also Negasonic maybe playable now:

Negasonic Teenage Warhead
  • [Old] 3/5 - After ANY card is played here, destroy this card AND that card.
  • [New] 3/2 - After an enemy card is played here, destroy it. (once per game)
Developer Note: Negasonic has languished for a while now. We've seen glimmers of experimentation every now and then, but ultimately Negasonic has just not cut it in competitive decks. More concerning, she's also turned out to be a bit complicated even for more casual play, requiring a fair amount of insight into matchups and priority to manage effectively. The biggest hurdles there are that the card both restricts your own play and blows herself up. So now it doesn't do either of those things! To compensate for this newfound strength when it comes to fighting over cramped locations on turn 6, we've reduced her Power a fair bit

I can understand wanting to change Mobius, but uh that literally looks like a dumpster tier nerf that will make him played about as much as Baron Mordo..

Negasonic is maybe a surprise turn 6 now, but you can only blow up an enemy card once per game and being 2 power makes her weak so its not like shes gonna close the power gap all that much in a lane either. I think her biggest issue is shes a Destroy card, but Destroy is so good theres not really a place for her in it that makes her better to run over other stuff?

I think a better nerf to Wave wouldve been not reducing 6 cost cards at least. I mean people pretty much use her exclusively to lay down Galactus, Alioth or whatever turn 4-5, but now this changes means Wave cant counter Bounce (and basically nothing can now I guess? Maybe junk clutter decks with Debrii, but I dunno)

Yeah, he should absolutely be a 1-cost, because his only real use at this point seems to be a surprise drop on turn 5 and that would at least open him up to being paired with a 4-cost.

Beta Ray Bill 4/6 - On Reveal shuffle Stormbreaker into your deck.

Stormbreaker 0/1 - On Reveal double BRBs
power.

Caiera 3/4 - Ongoing: Your 1 & 6 cost cards cant be destroyed

Hercules 4/6 - The first time another card moves here each turn, move it to another location.

Grandmaster 2/0 - On Reveal: Move one of your other On Reveal cards to the middle location. Its ability happens again.

Miek 1/1 - After each turn, if you discarded any cards, gain +1 power for each and move

Skaar 6/11 - Costs 2 less for each of your cards that has 10 or more power

Annihilus (got changed) 5/7 - On Reveal: Your cards with 0 or less power switch sides. Destroy those that cant.

Iron Lad in the Selene set is awesome since I wanted that one anyway. Howard and Galactus will be with Hercules too-- may go for that one.

You've really made me second guess going for Silk. I also got lucky with Werewolf in my first spotlight. But putting him in a move deck along with Silk sounds really appealing...

Silk is just good in general, a 2/5 you can drop early and sort of control where she ends up by the end of the game. That being said I don't know if she's really necessary in most of these decks. The only card that really benefits from Silk is Kraven and you're already filling his lane with on reveals to get Werewolf to come over to him.

Although I did find an interaction where if you play an on reveal into a lane as the 4th card and Silk is in the lane then she moves and THEN Werewolf comes in. Werewolf really seems to trigger after everything so it's pretty easy to get him to move. Your board just gets filled so fast when you're playing all of those cheap on reveals though.

Just tested and nope it doesn't work. She-Hulk and Death were both set to 4 although their costs should have been reduced.

With Wave being changed they should really give us that interaction back at least.

Well it was too strong of an effect when you were also limiting your opponent. It was the combo of playing 2 Death and a She-Hulk on turn 6 AND your opponent can only play 1 card.

Now your opponent can still play whatever they want, they even get a buff if they're playing 4+ cost cards!
