Funny to see how this game went from being a $20 Gamecube game I eventually got from Gamespot or Best Buy as a present to the game being a highly valued "hidden gem" of its era (or at least the subsequent GCN/PS2/XBox era). When I first played it at like 13 or 14, it was the perfect game with the right mix of charm and suspense / dark themes. If I were to play it now, it would probably be closer to when I played FFVII the first time, where it seemed archaic and uninspiring. I was finally able to get into FFVII after revisiting it and giving it some patience, and I can see how it got its classic status, but I do still see it as clumsier and less memorable than Skies of Arcadia, which I think was deserving of way more of a legacy than what it got.

I honestly don't really get the "It didn't age well" argument.

It's very typical JRPG. If it didn't age well, pretty much no JRPG did.

And if that's your stance, cool. But I've seen a ton of people say it didn't age well, then turn around and praise FF7-9.

Best story Ive played in a JRPG. The sky pirate theme is done amazingly well and theres a great sense of exploration and discovery. Dogshit battle system like most JRPGs. Every encounter is solved the same way.

I love the game, but man, the Green Moon Crystal Saga is PAINFUL

You gotta trek slower than usual across a area with enemies capable of Party OHKO moves
Visit the area village
Go in a dungeon
Visit the village again I think
ANOTHER dungeon
Fight the main area boss, admiral, and gigas in a row

Standard stuff these days, but I can kinda feel this game making it a ordeal based on when I last played it

It's up there with NiGHTs into Dreams as one of those games I wish I had gotten to play when it was new the most information I've retained about it is The protagonist gets a legit threesome ending. usually with RPGs there's always a bit of a triangle arc when it comes to that thing but apparently the story was done well enough that it being resolved that way was less taking the cowards way out and more "yeah, that seems on brand for them". On one hand, I'd love a modern remake that addresses the issues you guys are talking about like every encounter being reduced to the same tactics, the annoying encounter rate to begin with, this was way before on screen encounters became more common place, god damn was playing Digimon World 3 a painful horrific experience because of it, I don't think I ever beat that game, my dumbass got soft locked because I was using a gameshark and fought the Knightmon in the Asuka server without knowing it was an unwinnable battle and since my cheat was never losing HP I was trapped there for 3 days before I gave up and put the game away forever.

Not quite the same game but this game was bad even when I played it as a kid and yet this level alone was so memorable that I remember the entire game fondly. Like, the whole idea of the kids learning how to fly on their own through sheer Courage to protect Nights and the final level being their own home town. Used to get super emotional over it. Especially the part where the other kid shows up to share their Ideya of Hope with you so you can keep flying and then the vocals kick in.

Did you get to play Journey of Dreams? It's a sequel to Into Dreams sadly it bombed pretty badly but they actually got one of the kids VAs to return for that game to sing a song for it.
