I think you and the other poster need to get the stick out of your buts.

your just proving acemos right with your elitist attitude

How very fucking dishonest of you to quote so selectively.

Here is the full paragraph:

It's not a scam at all. TC is just permanently bothered by her fantasies about what the 'elites' are doing to poor people. And it's rarely the terrible stuff that they are actually doing, it's more this shit that's rooted in some imaginary grievance.

Very poor and disreputable. Even for you.

Not everyone even likes wine and those that do arent going to wine testers\tasters for advice. So it really is a scam.. There is nothing wrong with wine testing\tasting if you enjoy it as a hobby, There is a reason Wine Testing is not a professional career, and just a hobby.

It is a professional career. Retailers employ tasters to guide their purchases.

But sure, anything that isn't ignorant is 'elitist', right?

The bottles price is a separate affair. High price does not equate quality. Branding, amount of available, and vintage can affect the price. Certain vintages may be better than others, and this may be seen on the price.

I think TC thinks that taste determines the price, as if wine tasters claim to be able to have 100 bottles of wine - 1 made per year for 100 years - and can then blind taste any to say "this is 76 years old and this is 79 years old" and then they add on $50 per year to the price of a bottle. As if wine tasters are price graders who should be feared, but he is the only fellow brave enough to challenge them

It is the job of the wine tasters to select the wines that they feel will sell best for the retailer.

They do not set the price. That is done between the retailer and the suppliers.

The wine tasters who work for discount supermarkets will not be choosing wines that cost $200 a bottle. The ones who work for specialist retailers might.

There are cheap wines, and there are expensive wines. If you think the cheap ones are just as good, then buy them. No one is being scammed.

said by the bot who came into this thread with one purpose, to troll OP. It's pretty obvious you have a personal issue with them, which is fine

While I agree voting is important, especially in this day and age.. it is up to them.. if they dont want to vote, they dont have to .... and if youre going to treat them like shit just for not voting.... that wont convince them or anyone else to vote. it will just push them away from voting.

see if you didnt start off in this thread with "HAVE YOU VOTED YET?!" , maybe you would have more of a leg to stand on, and than you wnet on to start attacking me just for saying you have a stick up your but, which based on your vendetta with TC, you absolutely do.

than you decided to attack me just for defending OP..... and in the very same aggressive manner.

Don't talk to me about trolling when you don't have the guts to address your own dishonesty.

Don't talk to me about attacking others when your attack on me required you to misrepresent my post grossly.

Do you think you are entitled to a pass for your attempted deceit because you are a 'hardcore Democrat who cares about the planet'? I don't know why you even brought it up. It has no relevance. Though I am disappointed to see a hardcore Democrat exhibit the posting style of a Trumpist provocateur.

That reminds me of the film Bottleshock where someone in the wine region of California tries a wine and is able to guess it correctly and wins a bet. The guy who served that character was in on it.

This topic is hilarious.

Like okay I get it being a culture you have no experience with. But you don't even know what you're criticizing. At least have a bare minimum level of understanding first.

I know fuck all about wine but I did a wine tasting tour and it was fun. Nobody was out there scamming people into buying wine because they were blindly taste testing it and telling everyone it was 20 years old.

Wine taste testing is a scam, but an even bigger problem is the general lack of regulation in the industry. There's no way to know whether sweeteners, grape juice, coloring, or other ingredients were added. ...and it's already well known that terms like, "organic" are poorly defined.
I would very much support an FDA-compliant (or even FDA-like) ingredients label on all US wine.

I actually work in the wine industry and so I've blinded with somms from Intro level to Certified to Advanced.

In these blinds, I've pulled very specific wines and vintages for them to taste and it's actually wild what Advanced level (not even Master) will get right. At that level they will nail the grape, vintage and often the literal region (sometimes even the vineyard).

You have to understand that people that go beyond Certified are near psycho and have made wine their entire life. These people have tasted most wine that exists, have stupid genetics for smell and taste and insane recall.

Personally, I'm Intro and decided not to keep going down the path, but even I'm at about 60-70% accurate on varietal and country.

They used to do that at a festival near to me.

Terrible problems with people drinking and driving. If you give it out in tiny samples, people don't feel like they've drunk much, even even it adds up to more than a bottle.

Almost need to be in the industry to get to master.

Old friend of mine did a few of the levels, but said he'd never get that far. Partly because he could never afford the wines you need to have tasted to reach that level.

I mean if people want to take up wine tasting as a hobby then good for them I guess. But wine tasting actually is sort of bullshit. By that I mean that studies have shown much like with art that people are biased based on the origin of the product. If you give people a platter of French and California wines then people will overwhelmingly say the French wine is better. However in blind taste tests the results change substantially including the infamous event in the 70s where they took a bunch of the "top" French wine tasters and when asked to blindly judge California and French wines, every single one said the California wines tasted better. Now I'm sure there ARE certain traits that you can find out just by smelling and tasting, but taste is also subjective, and a quick Google search shows dozens of articles questioning the reliability of wine testers.

That's just tasting wine, though. What's being discussed here is the ability to taste, smell and observe a wine to determine it's origin. A blind tasting from a sommelier isn't done to determine which wine is better, it's done to determine the year and where it was produced by noticing subtle markers that only experts will notice.
