Buck-passing.
A president doing it unilaterally means congress is "innocent" or "hands tied" or whatever, and that's one less thing for PACs to constantly harp on when election season rolls around.

that makes no sense at all. Do you think people making 100K+ should be getting food stamps too?
Administratively, it's easier to give benefits to all and then have progressive taxes to get those back from those who are rich. Our tax system exists to do that, although it's not perfect due to the loopholes and weak enforcement. If we stop means-testing, there's far less paperwork for everyone involved and everyone who is eligible would actually get the benefit, instead of our current system where many eligible people lose benefits due to technicalities.

This is trash reasoning from them, it's judicial activism. They are carrying out their agenda to limit the power of federal agencies by restricting them to the most narrow interpretation whenever they feel like, when they don't like the political or economic consequences.

It's also disgusting that the NONPROFIT loan servicer that handles debt forgiveness for public interest workers is the trojan horse used to protect the profits of loan servicers at the expense of actual human beings. At the end of the day, this is a result of conservatives on the Supreme Court and conservatives in Missouri.

To find some sliver of a silver lining, Congress could hypothetically say that the Secretary does have the power to cancel all loans. That would likely be filibustered though unless it's in a budget bill. That should be added to the top of the agenda for a second Biden term and he better increase the loan forgiveness as a fuck you.

Your accomplishments are likely dependent on a whole lot of societal and fiscal support that the majority of the US population doesn't have. You can delude yourself, as many conservatives do, that you're just the absolute shit and everyone else are freeloaders, but the truth is that you probably just started at a point that didn't require too much for success.

This case was solely about whether the executive branch has the ability to write off debt. The PPP loans were a bill passed through congress. Student debt forgiveness was an executive order. An executive order that a year prior to Biden writing it Pelosi herself stated that only Congress has the power to write off debt.

This was never legitimate, and no matter how angry people get over being grifted, it doesn't change the simple fact of the case. The president can't erase debt with an executive order. Only Congress can do that. Pelosi should have done it, but she didn't.
