The fact that I'm first being made aware of private Titanic wreck tours that don't directly involve James Cameron actually being a thing through the headline news of one going missing tells the whole story. The ignorance and / or hubris required to hop in a tiny sub and travel 10,000 feet below the ocean's surface without years of training and expertise is just off the charts. I feel extreme pity and remorse for any victim who actually got sold on some fun adventure pitch without being told the extreme risks; beyond that, this is the case of a rich kid buying a high-powered sports car they have no business driving and wrapping it around a telephone pole times 100.

I havent seen anyone wishing a horrible death to them. Just people understanding what happened already, and some of them going well. They did this to themselves and also they suck.

The death penalty has certainly killed people that were completely innocent, people that have caused less harm than billionaires, and people who didnt actively sign a waiver that said they knew theyd probably die before climbing into a $250,000 dollar death trap.

So really, Id say being for the death penalty is probably much worse than a single instance of wishing for the death of these rich people. (Not that anyone was doing that.)

I still don't know why people are thinking they were just sitting on the ocean floor for days. Like if you didn't have faith that the part of the sub they would have been able to test most thoroughly didn't work (rising back to the surface), why would you have faith that the rest of the sub would hold up especially after knowing their viewport was only rated to go a third of the way to the titanic

but alas if they weren't able to be found floating on the surface of the water, instantly imploding would have been the most humane way to go

Really? I might be way out of touch then, I thought the tech necessary to safely get manned vessels down to that kind of depth was still relatively new.

B: Their communication system was bad and they had lost contact earlier and
C: They managed to get stuck on Titanic in an earlier dive.

Usually I think of ROVs when it comes to Titanic exploration but I guess submersibles have been used quite a bit as well. Here's the timeline BBC posted yesterday

1985 - Titanic site discovered by American-French team

1986 - Submersible Alvin explores wreck

1987 - First salvage expedition collects 1,800 Titanic artefacts

1995 - James Cameron visits the wreck - footage is used in his film Titanic

1998 - First tourists dive there

1998 - Section of the Titanic hull is raised

2005 - Two crewed submersibles dive to the wreck

2010 - Autonomous robots map the site

2012 - Wreck now protected by Unesco

2019 - DSV Limiting Factor sub makes five dives

2020 US and UK agree treaty to protect Titanic wreck

2021 OceanGate makes first successful attempt to reach the site

2023 First full-size digital scan of the wreck is created using deep-sea mapping

I know I showed my ass earlier by being way behind the times on manned deep-sea exploration, but I still can't get over how nightmarish it is to realize that we're already well into the corner-cutting commercialization phase of deep sea tourism. You'd probably have a better chance of survival getting stranded in a malfunctioning spaceship.

Maybe the silver lining here is that this disaster will wake people up to how foolish it is to do something like this even remotely casually.

It's almost certain that they didn't fully know what they were getting into due the corner-cutting design of the craft. Beyond that, there's plenty of people on this planet from all walks of life who don't come close to grasping the full breadth of Mother Nature's unforgiving brutality; I've argued with a good friend on many occasions who believes, among other things, that he'd be able to simply swim to safety if he got caught in the storm surge of a major hurricane.

The kind of people who think it's a neat idea to strap into a minivan-sized sub and travel 10,000 feet below sea level with (what I assume to be) minimal training and expertise are the exact kind of people who aren't going to take waivers seriously.

No, the hull was not rated for this expedition and barely survived the previous ones and probably failed due to fatigue from all those compression/decompression cycles.
