Right? So even if it's floating on the surface, itself a very unlikely scenario, they're sealed in a water tight tube, probably aware the fresh air they need is right fucking there. All the fuck no.

Sick. A sub like that should be an absolute no-go.

Although honestly, I find it much more likely that they're already dead (sorry).

https://www.newsweek.com/stockton-rush-was-issued-dire-warning-submersible-titanic-expedition-1807992?amp=1

The letter, which was reportedly signed by more than three dozen experts in the field, alleged that Rush was "misleading" his potential customers over the safety of the "experimental" submersible and breaching "an industry-wide professional code of conduct" by refusing tests to meet the safety standards of marine classification societies like DNV or ABS.

"We recommend that at a minimum you institute a prototype testing program that is reviewed and witnessed by DNV-GL (or ABS)," the 2018 letter reads. "While this may demand additional time and expense, it is our unanimous view that this validation process by a third-party is a critical component in the safeguards that protect all submersible occupants."

Rush reportedly called the chairman of the committee after reading and rejecting the letter, explaining that he was ignoring the recommendations of the experts in favor of the company's own safety standards because "industry regulations were stifling innovation."

Everything I learn about this story gets increasingly worse and stupid

NASA knew about the Challenger space shuttle's O-ring flaw, but hid the information and went forward with the launch. Project Director Allan McDonald tried to prevent the disaster, but ended up having his career and his reputation ruined for trying to do the right thing. NASA definitely has blood on their hands.

Crazy to think they planned to send Carrol Spinney on that shuttle. Fortunately, the potential difficulty of wearing the Big Bird costume on board saved him.

All that's really been confirmed is underwater noises were detected. USS Thresher had "underwater nosies" when it sank below its test depth as well. despite what the first tweet says, they're not indicative of life. All that means is they've detected noise that they are confident is not part of the area background noise. Which could just be from the crushed sub letting out bits of trapped air.

Until they pull a living person out of that sub, I'm not going to believe any one is alive in it. Actual submarines have 100% fatality when things go wrong, I'm not putting any more fait in this glorified water main pipe.

I'm almost certain the sub imploded. If it didn't they would've just released ballast and floated up to the surface & activated a rescue beacon. The thought that you could lose your life in mere milliseconds by forces largely out of your control is scary to people, so people tend to go with the hypothesizes that hold out hope for rescue and allow for some degree of control over the chaos.

Deaths do happen but not everyone onboard would necessarily die such as Loshariks crew allegedly.

Granted, Loshariks full capabilities and exact purpose is unknown due to it being top-secret so Russia and certain people involved dont want to talk about it.

If they are still alive down there on the ocean floor, cant imagine wat would be going thru their minds. Pretty sure they have to know their chances of survival are close to 0%. I mean just sitting there waiting to die by suffocation is gotta be a slow agonizing death.

The sub imploding would have atleast be instant, they prob wouldn't have realized they even died.

Losharik is a special case. It caught fire during a training exercise where the objective was to practice docking to a mother sub, and it was in coastal waters. And my own reading suggests more than a few crew members did die, but either way, the circumstances of Losharik's accident are totally different than this glorified tin can's.

The real miracle is it survived a previous trip to that depth.

Also, Losharik is a deep diving "underwater engineering sub" (read: spy sub), with a unique internal pressure hull arrangement of joined spheres. It gets its name from the 70s Soviet short film of the same name about a horse made of balls.

To expand on the analogy, the Dragon capsule has no physical controls. Just a touchscreen.

The submersible didn't even have that. Just a single button.

Not sure why a tether isn't mandated for these kinds of submersibles.
Because a 3 mile long tether isn't practical.
