Even for its time. Cutscenes and battle characters looked phenomenal. So did all the pre rendered stuff in the environments.

But the characters? Looked like fucking play-dough.

They had hooves instead of hands. https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/2/7/0/AAfdTjAAEd9G.png

And I'm even more baffled that this was done on purpose...

For anyone who praises this look, it's obvious that it looked bad because they never made characters look like this again.

The only character who looks okay with hooves is Barret and that's because he already has a square head and has a gun arm. Lmao.

I honestly don't know what's more visually jarring: FF6 --> FF7, or FF7 --> FF8

6-7 you go from beautiful end-of-life SNES sprite graphics that honestly still really hold up, to really shitty-looking early PS1 polygons that definitely do not. But FF8 and FF9 are such a leap forward that they look like they're literally on an entirely different system than 7 was.

It is because it was originally being designed for the N64. When they did the switch to the PS they redid a lot of the stuff that they could (this is most notable in the cutscenes and backgrounds) but the models were stuck the way that they were.

Fair enough. I like the way everything looks except the characters. Even the monsters look great. Battle characters look amazing. Thank God the characters didn't have this crap chibi look in combat too.

Yeah that was weird. I also didn't care for the pre rendered backgrounds. Together they looked awful.

As a kid, I thought Wild Arms and Suikoden looked so much better and they came out like right before it. Well, the battle scenes in Wild Arms looked worse, but I liked their overall approach.

It was early ps1 with polygon graphics. FF7 didn't look bad for it's time, not cutting edge visuals but not "ugly" either.

Definitely impressive, we owe early 3d everything we have today.

That being sad I loathe pre-rendered backgrounds. The fact that the game was self-aware enough to have a giant hand point at Cloud wherever he was just proves that, I'm thankful they had it though. Still remember being downright stuck in the junkyard or something other place where I had no idea what was meant to be depth perception and where to go.

I like the Lego blocky characters now but I won't pretend I didn't complain to my friend when I first played the game and was shocked, especially after expectations being built up when FF 7 had had like 10 years of fanboying prior to finally being able to play it and not to mention the compilation of ff 7 going strong during that time.

But truly ps2 was the perfect point of gaming where 3d was perfected and gaming could start experimenting and expanding. Too bad we didn't get 3 FFs back-to-back during that era but oh well.

I just played through FF7 (OG, not remake) last month - I'm still good with it. It was great for the time. I remember spending my 1997 Christmas break playing through the entire game. I thought it was amazing.

Judging 1997's graphics 26 years later is like judging a cell phone from that era through today's lens. Anyone want this Nokia?

I don't mind the chibi look, but the models themselves are poorly made. The torso/limbs/head are all separate parts, which was common with early 3D, but some of them are really bad. Whenever Heidegger leans back and laughs you can see his torso just split in half.

"The fuck?" my ass.

The character models are garbage. Even in the sketches they would have made Cloud all "smurfed out" so even if the game had better graphics, it was a stylistic choice.

Not hard to understand.

"The fuck?" is what I said when I saw that they all have hooves instead of hands. Looks ridiculous.

It all goes back to your bad reading comprehension. This is what you understood from what was said. However, what you can understand isn't the height of reality but rather it's a lot closer to the floor, for example.

'Even' for its time, refers to the fact that while, yes, it did have "good" graphics for its time, the word "even" is there because, objectively, it still looks like shit to me (character models only, not including battle models or environments) due to the art direction/graphic design for those particular models being bad. The hooves for hands wasn't a technical limitation but rather it was chosen on purpose.

And why am I saying the art direction specifically? Because even if this game came out on the PS2, they had every intention of making Cloud look like a deformed Popeye Smurf person as visible in one of the concept sketches for the game. Like another user said, it was done to maintain the 2D style that FF was known for, but to make it 3D.

And it looks horrible.

SloMo in GamePro Issue 109 from October 1997 gave the game a 5.0 for its graphics, sound, controls, and "fun factor". They praised the game's story, which they felt was above most games.
