It isn't that outlandish to stop being friends with someone because they went from being an interesting person to only ever talking about house work and their kids/spouse.

Generally speaking, people under 35 will probably never own a home. I certainly won't be able to as I make about $30k/year and don't have strong prospects for making more. It's not an absolute rule, of course, but it's the reality for a lot of people.

My cousin bought a house last year. He was able to save up the down payment because he lived with his parents for years. Absolutely zero disrespect. Glad for him. I moved out when I was nineteen because my father was abusive. My mother has destroyed her own life by being an alcoholic wreck in the last few years as well. I've never had the luxury of just living with my parents as an adult.

You can call it what you want, but I literally witnessed it.

She has two friends that have fallen out of touch with her, and the reasoning they gave is that she passed them by in where she is, success wise, and they now have nothing in common because she is a wife and a mom with different experiences and responsibilities.

Are they actually saying it's because she's successful and has money?

Because this doesn't seem like it's about her having a house. She's a new mom and has different responsibilities and her friends don't seem to want to put in the work to stay connected through these life experiences.

I feel like the media is really out of touch with most of the country.
Most of the country does not live in a huge cities where investors are buying up houses making it impossible for people to buy them.
Around me you can buy a house for $65,000. It is not some unattainable dream.

I can only go by what she told me, as I've only met the friends once at their wedding, but she told me that they literally said that her life has "passed them by" and they have nothing in common with her anymore.

But when you really look at it, you don't need this story to tell you there's a distinct line drawn between the "haves" and the "have nots". You really don't need to look further than this board for evidence of that.

But that wasn't the point of me bringing it up. My point originally was how the "35 and under success story" really hasn't changed over the last 40 years (if you're using home ownership as a gauge), just the illusion of being a successful 30-something. And that illusion has caused a rift within the generation itself.

To be fair though, most of this discussion is about housing where a majority of people live and are where most jobs are. I believe you live in rural Ohio?

But I will say, I dislike when news talks about "corporations" buying up all the houses, because that is not really the reason for inflated house prices. Sure it's an issue, but it's not the main reason. The main reason is we don't build enough housing, and the reason for that many times is local citizens who block new housing from being made. The like of people who will talk about wanting affordable housing to exist, but will push against new apartment complexes being built in their neighborhood.

Yes I do live in rural Ohio, and while I know why people talk about the inability to buy a house in large urban markets, these aren't the only places people live and houses aren't unattainable everywhere (though people don't want to live in those places like where I live).
And you're right, in bigger markets people buying up all the houses isn't the only problem in this situation.

And to be clear, I wasn't trying to take a dig at you in any way. I think many do tend to significantly underrate and look down on many of the areas where housing is cheaper due to various unfounded biases. There are definitely areas in States where housing will be cheaper and there will still be plenty of activities to do, people to meet, etc.

simply making an exaggeration isn't a joke especially when you're just saying something that a trillion other people already constantly say
That's a large part of what John Oliver does though. That's a part of his routine.

You getting bent up over "actually some people under 35 will own homes" would be like me saying "a trillion people can't say that, there's not even a trillion people on earth!"

Like no shit

The "joke" is that EVERYONE under the age of 35 do not and never will own a home.

The reality is 40% of adults age 35 and younger own a home.

While that is a small number when compared to older age groups, the number is trending upward, and is actually on par with basically every other year going back to the 1980's, where the percentage basically fluctuated between 35-45% for about 40 years now.

"Nobody under 35 can afford a house if we ignore the fact that 40% of people under 35 currently own houses and that's been consistent for 40 years" isn't exactly how he's presenting the material.

"suburban" is a very open ended though..

Example. Where I live is considered suburban, but is only and hour train ride from the heart of New York City.

So how far from the City, or even the suburbs do you need to be to be considered "rural"?

That's the trade-off though. You can move out to the middle of nowhere for cheaper prices, but then you have a much longer drive to get to anything. My gf's parents live out in a city with a population of about 29k. The nearest major city is about 120 miles away.

I work for the state government (our offices are only in major cities), so it would be really inconvenient for me to live in a city like that. So I will have to make living in the city work

A city of 29k is hardly the middle of nowhere. That kind of city is going to have plenty of shopping and entertainment options.

I bought my house at 36 two years ago. Glad I got in before he made the cutoff.

The Chuck E Cheese video was kind of dumb. It dragged on for entirely too long and it wasn't as interesting or funny as he hoped.

This sounds like I'm shitting on him. I'm not. One of my favorite things each Monday is getting home from work and firing up his "main story" video from the night before.
