hopefully they'll be returned okay since they're saying the kidnapping was due to mistaken identity (even though kidnapping is messed up regardless).

Most of the world is like that, from all angles. You need border restrictions because a country only has so many resources, but they need to make sure the person they're letting in will be a benefit and not a hindrance to society. They've gotta care for their own natives first.

Even the USA when it's strict, isn't that strict compared to the rest of the world. Singapore, the Scandinavian countries, Japan--so many have incredibly strict rules that would make the USA blush for who they allow to immigrate or not. Because it can very easily lead to lack of housing and job opportunities for the natives who need it depending on how much they relax said rules.

Hell the USA's often called one of the easiest to immigrate to, and that was before the recent relaxation on immigration processes.

How would border control have prevented this?

Tourists have been killed/kidnapped over there for some time now. And I've been wanting to go on a Cancun trip for a while, but after hearing these news...one gets a bit weary.

I imagine the cartels are in the pockets and noses of a lot of powerful people.

If Americans went into Mexico of their own will against travel advisories and got killed, then the US isnt going to do anything except maybe re-emphasize those advisories.

The only way the US would take strong action against the cartels is if they launched some sort of raid into the US and kidnapped Americans to ransom off or something. Then you might see something big. And of course, the cartels would never actually do this.

Send in the Army Rangers. The Cartel would never forget it.

It's sad that as a kid camping in Big Bend national park was a big deal to me...I remember our tent was 100ft from the Rio Grande and I walked into Mexico without getting my knees wet.

Now I wouldn't even spend a day there.

its honestly not that bad. The cartels dont usually fuck with tourists. They dont want too much attention from the US. If anything is going to happen you're more likely to get pickpocketed or mugged.

I go pretty often to mexico to visit my gfs family and its pretty safe in most locations.

I never said that other countries are as bad as the US, just that every country that engages in expeditionary military operations are guilty as well, not that I am saying that as an excuse, but it is disingenuous to constantly call out the US on it while ignoring the fact that every country that participates in foreign military actions with us have blood on their hands as well. Also, none of this has anything to do with the original argument I was countering, the supposed incompetence of the US military.
