Ive been thinking and thats a pretty fair point. He has such a blunt way of putting things and its hard to argue (after the fetus forms). Of course Im a man so it doesnt matter to me either way but good luck to the gals.

A fetus isn't a kid, or a baby, or a human being. It's a fetus. And it's part of the woman's body, meaning she has final say over it.

A fetus isn't a kid. Stop letting your siglessness and number in username issues mess with your head.

Being swayed in a major political/moral issue by a joke that's factually incorrect seems pretty smooth brained to me.

I've been offered political shows before, and I don't know anything about politics and I feel uncomfortable making political opinions - there's consequences to them. I often think I'm wrong, so I really don't like getting in political or religious discussions because of the giant possibility that I might be wrong.

Humans aren't on the endangered species list.

If a joke ever causes you to make a major ideological change in your life you should probably take a look at how selectively youre vetting your opinions.

Especially a joke from a comedian who's built a career out of being borderline nonsensical.

I agree in principal but that doesnt give people Carte Blanche to have them whenever and however they see fit.

We already have things in place that dictate when and how they are performed. Such as no abortions after x weeks. Im pro choice but I appreciate that it is still necessary to have certain guidelines in place and there is nothing wrong with reviewing this every so often.

We already have things in place that dictate when and how they are performed. Such as no abortions after x weeks. Im pro choice but I appreciate that it is still necessary to have certain guidelines in place and there is nothing wrong with reviewing this every so often.

I mean, there's a pretty effective solution to this.

Anyone who says someone should be forced to have a child should be forced to support that child for the rest of their lives. You wanted them, you take care of them.

I've always thought an abortion is essentially killing the fetus/unborn baby/whatever you want to call them.

But the impact of pregnancy and agency of the mother always overrides that for me, and leads me to be pro choice. So I still think there is a strong argument for being pro-choice regardless.

I love Norm, but I got to defer to George.

It depends. Some comedians can tell jokes, but have a sort of philosophical edge to them that could actually make you think about stuff. Carlin made me rethink a lot of stuff and probably was the start of me questioning my religion. You're probably right about Norm though.

The only relevant guideline is whether the pregnant person and their doctor feel an abortion is warranted. There are catastrophic conditions and defects that go undetected until "x weeks" that justify abortion. There are complications that can emerge late in a pregnancy. The government has absolutely zero business determining what medical procedures should be available to a patient and when.

I was speaking factually about the conditions under which an abortion is currently permitted. If that didnt come across I can only apologise.

In most states you cant have an abortion after 20 weeks.

Do we have anyone here who feels that the 20 week cut off is too restrictive and a women should be able to have an abortion up until their due date?

I do accept that there are cases where the mums life may be in risk where this could be bypassed with the sign off of a doctor but Im specifically taking about people who want an abortion because they do t want a kid.

Happy to have another discussion on abortion after the current cut off people when the mums life is at risk but Id rather do that in a separate thread to prevent the two being conflated.
