What a bizarre one.

You could tell half those staff members didn't want to die, and to do it by fire of all things is just evil.

Imagine being the chef & Voldemort says "hey champ I got a gr8 idea for tonight's dinner, how do you feel about shooting yourself in the throat"

It depends on how much you know about the foodie/ celeb chef subculture.

I found it to be funny at times but I don't understand how it made so many best of the year lists.

It's meant to be a dark comedy more than anything. It certainly isn't shit, I just it didn't find it as great as everyone else did.

It's worth a watch. I put it off too but really enjoyed it. Definitely a dark comedy.

I also didn't care for it much. Started off pretty good, but by the end it just became ridiculous yet predictable.

The only flaw I have in it is the fact that he wanted to kill John Leguizamo and his assistant/lover/whatever over exceptionally petty reasons.

It was fantastic. Having worked in haute cuisine earlier in life it nailed chef culture, toxic kitchen environments, and shitty customers perfectly.

Tyler was a perfect example of why "foodies" are reviled by chefs/service industry.

he straight up told him that he was going to die during their email in the 8 months before, he just simply thought it wasnt going to happen to him

it's not actually about food it's about media and art in general

I wonder what Chef did tell him that made him choose to hang himself. It sounded like he actually had the opportunity to go but chose to kill himself.

I kinda wonder if Chef told him to leave and live out the rest of his life knowing that his "knowledge" of food was so meager and disinteresting that it reminded him of a child playing with an Easy Bake oven.

i think the chef probably just told him he wasnt worthy of being killed by him and should do it himself

Anya Taylor-Joy's character discovers that the chef was only ever truly happy when he was a line cook making burgers at a fast food joint, so she tells him to make her a cheeseburger and he's grateful enough to her for reminding him of the happiness he used to feel while cooking that he lets her go.

I didn't get the whole are you with "us" or "them." Like, we're all dying together, why the fuck does it matter who I'm with? But I like how he tried to kick her out because she wasn't supposed to be there and she refused to go. Haha, you had your chance. The burger thing was so obvious and pretty lame...

I saw this in the cinema, it was great. Very arty and weird

Of course it mattered to Slowik, he's an absolute control freak who makes his subordinates live in a bunker with no privacy.

He establishes this early on when he noticed Margot didn't want to eat, dude was basically about to cry about ruined portions.

Also the lines tweezered to fuck, no bread, and later on cooking with no love, and cold.

It doesn't have to make sense to you but he's shown to be completely neurotic about these things.

The murders didn't even make sense in terms of who deserved it, it was just people who don't appreciate the experience of eating good food, who he labels as takers.

I get all that, but if he was so repulsed by these people, it would seem that he would torture them to death and then give the "workers" a quick painless death. Like the dude who shot himself definitely different suffer the burning fate of the others...

I know, but they seem to have gone through some therapy with this feast--I can see his tortuous death at the middle of it all representing the self-realization that he has become one of "them" but his staff deserve a quick death if any at all. In fact, other than the ones that chose to die, they should've been able to live--that just shows how much more like "them" he was and kind of defeats the whole self-realization this particular menu is focused around...

Skipped the topic so far to avoid spoilers, about 30 mins into this movie. Will probably post impressions after it's over, liking the tone and dark humor of it so far.

Enjoyed it a lot, very odd overall and I like that it was different. Good watch for sure.

some of the justifications for killing one of the diners was incredibly weak imo.

The assistant yes. For Johns character I originally thought it was cause chef saw that bad movie and didnt like it but on second watch he says its because he sees an artist who lost his purpose which John sighs and agrees with.

It was ok. I would take it back if I could.

Yeah that was more the depth of it, that he just put forth such a bad effort acting in that movie that he lost his way, forgot the art, and is just riding the money now. It was more "I wasted my time because you stopped caring." It seemed like most suffered from extreme entitlement and selfishness.

I also want to know if those things that burn images into tortillas and bread are real.

They are, but it's not burned though. The images are digital printed with food-safe coloring.

I saw Triangle of Sadness last thursday. (Overall loved it, although it has some gross stuff in the middle act).

Very different movies--commentary on social hierarchy is the main theme in both movies but that's about the only connection. I actually went in thinking I'd like Triangle way more than this but it turned out I liked this much more. Honestly, I didn't think either movie was that good though. Parasite does the theme much much better.

Oh for me it wasn't so much about the commentary, but about the setting (a group of guests thinking they are given a luxury experience, but then shit happens).

Is Menu more of a thriller/horror then?
