First.. fantastic book. Easily one of my investing favorites, or possibly even my favorite. Nothing matches it in terms of taking a simple, no bullshit approach to explaining how the market works and why its a good idea to get in and ride out the waves and noise.

2nd I do essentially invest quite a bit into VTSAX (total market) equivalents via my 401k and HSA. Side note - I started getting into the HSA as a direct result of SPtW, and am sincerely kicking myself for not getting in sooner.

I dont really invest into it much in my regular brokerage account, but thats only because I have plenty of coverage in my retirement accounts so my brokerage is more for playing around with individual companies, inverses, leveraged ETFs, etc. It seems to hold true though that by getting into any total market index that youre capturing all that the market has to offer. Youre not going to make as much as if you go balls deep on an individual stock or speculation, but youre also not going to get hammered as much if things tank. Just take a look at the 5-year VTI chart to see that although things have been somewhat gloom and doom the past year, its still up even from the pre-COVID market peak. If anyone wants to get into the market but doesnt want to have to worry about picking individual stocks or guessing, its the best way to go.

Lastly, relevant:

They are, for all intents and purposes, the same. A total stock market index.

VTSAX is a mutual fund, while VTI is an ETF. They are both Vanguard funds and track the total market, so its just a matter of where you are holding funds (brokerage vs Roth, IRA, 401k, etc) at the determining factor for which one you can buy.

Everything is low right now but it will have to rise back up eventually. Might not ever reach its peak again but I am confident it will at least get to 200s by summer

I agree, but they also have a decade head start on every other EV. They have by far the most advanced technology of any EV.

But their build quality is questionable and while they have a head start, other companies have been making cars for over half a century. It's just a matter of time until they catch up.

And their manufacturing scale, tech, financial position, margins, etc

Their only disadvantage is Elon and his insistence on bringing down the brand with bad pub as he childishly thumbs his nose at politicians and media instead of paying them off like the other automakers do.

Question is how? I've heard it for many years because it's intuitive to think so, but it never actually happens because there's no reason it would.

They are smaller companies than Tesla, way behind Tesla, have to juggle making gas cars to keep the lights on while they try to start their EV businesses from scratch. All while already up to their eyes in debt and no money to invest seriously in catching up. Unless the govt gets heavily involved it makes more sense for them to bow out while Apple, Amazon, and Chinese brands compete with Tesla.

Ford, GM, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, BMW, VW...all of these companies have already put out EV or its in the pipeline, all have the capital to be successful.

And honestly if you do the math, Hybrid is the way to go. Americans will always do whats cost efficient and buying a cheap Ford or Toyota hybrid is by far the smartest bang for buck.

Americans love pickup trucks and Ford already beat Tesla to the electric truck and it doesnt look like a blindfolded six year old drew it from memory.

Cybertruck will probably have some nicer tech and better range but it looks so god damn stupid that I dont think itll catch on that well when people look at the other options (not really counting Rivian ATM since they start way higher than Tesla and Ford)

I've been following these pipelines for over 10 years and it isn't even in their plans to be competitive. None have the capital to be successful which is why they haven't been.

The few Evs they have put out are low volume, unprofitable, and only because they were forced to. It wasn't a voluntary step 1 with a path forward, they're stuck at this level. We've seen total recalls with halted production from GM, Ford, and Toyota because they're still struggling to manufacture EVs even at a small scale.

If you do the math on the margins and how quickly Tesla can and just did cut prices, they could sell a model 3 for cheaper than a Prius anytime they want to. Toyota can't cut prices any further.

They beat Tesla to delivering a baker's dozen trucks at a loss. I'll believe their expansion plans when I see it, but unlike the others it's in their plans to be competitive so I give em credit.

I was surprised Elon already admitted they've prepared a normal looking truck if (more like when lol) need be.

Any downside to investing in VTI or VTSAX directly through ETRADE (or another online brokerage)? Have seen some conflicting things online, some that say to do it directly through Vanguard, others that say there are no fees through ETRADE. Question goes to anyone else also, but CE_gonna_CE was part of that discussion a few days ago.

Pretty much. Some folks prefer Vanguard to Fidelity simply because of their ownership structure, but as long as trades are commission free its all the same wherever you hold it.
