They come at a higher cost entry point than the contemporary french fry. However, they don't cost anymore to produce. An onion and a potato are comparable in price.

But the biggest part of the scam we accept is the quantity. When ordering the much cheaper french fry, you obtain roughly 50 french fries. When ordering onion rings, you obtain roughly 7 rings.

We need to put an end to this behavior.

Does one potato make more fries than one onion makes onion rings though? Plus onion rings tend to be battered.

I dunno how much any of this actually effects price wise though.

This pretty much. Onion rings take more ingredients and prep time.

Bulk french fries are basically a two-step manufacturing process: Potato through a cutter, then a pre-fry.
It's not quite as easy to disassemble an onion and batter it.

I find that most onion rings just tasted like batter/breading. I don't really taste the onion. Does the onion inside really add that much flavor vs. just eating the fried batter sans onion?

I've never made either, but it's a lot more work slicing a potato into french fries than it is to chop an onion into onion rings. As far as additional prep, onion rings are battered, breaded, and fried (I'm assuming only once). French fries are seasoned, frozen, fried once, and then fried again.

It really makes it seem like french fries are sold pretty cheap compared to the effort it takes to make them. Onion rings are sold at a premium considering you're seldom served the entire onion.

It is because everything already contains onion and you are conditioned to expect the flavor so it takes more of it to be "noticeable." Unless you have a super dank onion ring you can definitely taste the onion, it just doesn't end up being as crazy because your mind already goes onion ring -> batter w/ onion powder -> batter. It's the same with garlic in that there are a lot of things that have a lot of garlic but you don't really pay attention to it because most of the time garlic is just assumed. In addition it also matters what type of onion ring that you are talking about. Cornmeal versus beer-battered is a notable change in just how much you can taste the onion.

You can use 100% of a potato to make fries.

You can't use 100% of an onion to make onion rings.

E: Also onions are absolutely more expensive per pound than potatoes are.

It takes a single push through a potato slicer to cut the tater. Several pushes through the mandolin for the onion.
