Texas, Florida... idk; one of the southern states where I'd be less than welcome

I wouldn't be opposed to moving to New York, if I knew I could survive financially. Where I'm living now is one of the lowest costs of living in the country, so it would be a big change.

I think most states have some areas where I could find like-minded people and laws are probably less important to me than things to do. The coasts generally have things going on, if nothing else, and mountains are nice. Sooo...

North Dakota/Iowa. I live in MN and I'm still not completely certain if they exist or not. Minnesota weather without Minnesota cities or lakes/etc. After 43 years as a neighbor I still can't think of any reason to go/live there. Nebraska is a (very small) step above with a couple minor cities of note. Kansas is at least a little warmer.

Alabama/Mississippi. The Gulf Shore is a little interesting. Otherwise...I can't think of any reason to go/live there.

Oklahoma. A warmer but more conservative Iowa.

To everyone saying New York, do you mean just NYC or the actual state? Upstate NY is actually fairly nice, at least from what I've seen along route 17/17M (about the Warwick to Suffern area) as well as Greenwood Lake.

NYC is a much different beast.

NYC is a much different beast.
As someone who lives in Western NY, most people associate NYC with New York. And yea, NYC is a completely different beast from NYS. The biggest problem is despite the ridiculously low housing costs we still have to deal with essentially NYC levels of taxes. Like I don't think unless you live in my area you can comprehend paying $6K a year in taxes on a house that costs less then $150K. But that is just what I am used to.

Anyways... California, Texas, Hawaii.

I assume right-wing trolling. No one would willingly live in AL over NY for any sane reason. Hell, parts of non-NYC are like the South anyways. It'd be cooler if people stated reasons why.

That said:

Either Nebraska or Oklahoma

Pretty much all political reasons, coupled with the geography being not that interested, and not close to better/more interesting states.

I assume it is because it is all small/costal towns and no big cities. Hell, the biggest "city" in Maine only has a population less than 70K. Personally, I love that. I have gone their 3 times on vacation and I would love to retire there.

Otherwise I assume it is some BS political reason that in the end doesn't effect them one bit but people are pissed about because reasons.

Our country is treated like an economic powerhouse with a job to do over an ideal place to live.

At least, that's how they constantly justify privatizing almost everything and putting corporations on a pedestal. Anything that threatens the income of a corporation is treated as a national threat. It's a pattern that repeats itself everywhere, even our streets were lobbied by automobile manufacturers so that public transportation just doesn't make sense. What you call corruption these people call a positive thing. They say we can't fall behind China, or fall behind on the world stage.

It's probably the reason why, even though we are culturally basically the same as Canada or England, they have much more solid welfare safety nets, because they don't worry about being the most powerful country on Earth. Or at least use that as an excuse to let CEOs walk all over them.
