The actual zones in 14 are small by MMO standards.

To put it in his words, FF14 is an RPG first and an MMO second.

And it holds true to that, having easily the best story in Final Fantasy.

- British voice actors

I would say graphically FF is still a fairly polished series; it's just that gameplay wise there hasn't been a mainline non-online entry with a well-constructed gameplay loop that balances exploration with combat since... X probably.

XII has a decent world, but the areas are too big, and battles DRAG at normal speed, which is why the Zodiac Age re-release is a godsend. I have positive memories of XIII's battles but not the exploration. Didn't play the XIII sequels but I hear conflicting opinions. XV is probably the worst battle system the series has had and it completely drops the ball with exploration in its second half. While I enjoy 7 remake's combat, nothing honestly matters in terms of character progression/build, and unless you're fighting a super boss you can pretty much do whatever.

So when people talk about polish in terms of FF, I think they're talking more about the full gameplay package more than just graphics and presentation.
