I cringe at the idea that a person is phobic of a thing just because that same person like a thing or doesn't agree with it.

We need to buck this modern trend.

For instance, saying: "trans people can do as they wish! But I would never date them because I am straight"

Has in it the implication that you do not view trans people as their transitioned sex, but as their born sex.

I... think this is a pretty tenuous assertion to apply to homophobes in general. I also don't think it really matters if they're scared or not

You need to be more specific. Hating or boycotting something because it has a minority, a woman or LGBTQ representation in it does make someone phobic.

Yeah it's dang near lost all meaning for me at this point.
It's basically been stretched out to apply to so much stuff that being called "-phobic" doesn't even mean anything any more, and essentially translates to "We disagree, so you're ____phobic." 90% of the time.

I guarantee you most of those accused of being -phobic just shrug it off or don't even care as a result, whereas they would if it were used more sparingly and had a more select assortment of circumstances for it to actually apply.

It's like "bigot". Used to be a strong word. Now it's demoted to a party clown :x

I think TC is moreso referring to trans related things than gay ones.

The lazy example is trans athletes in sports. One can disagree with trans women competing with cis women without being labeled as phobic.

I think the big problem is that transphobes are afraid of trans people for irrational reasons, but it would be more ideal if they were afraid of trans people, and their allies, friends and loved ones, for very real reasons.

The true ideal, of course, it's that they stop being transphobes, but I'm willing to compromise by collectively intimidating them into shutting the ever loving fuck up.

They only use it as a political cudgel.

The same can be said about the opposing side, so I dunno why this is constantly a rebuttal.

I would presume the folks who want trans women to be able to compete with cis women is because they care about trans people having a fair shot competitively.

Folks who dont want trans women competing with cis women presumably care because they want cis women to have a fair shot competitively.

Neither side is particularly a fan of womens sports in general. But everyone can be empathetic to the plight of unfairness.

So the argument of You never cared about womens sports before! is always silly because thats ignoring the reason people care now.

Some sections of the right have mercilessly mocked womens sports for decades. In particular the WNBA and the womens soccer team.

Now these same people suddenly care about the integrity of the sport when a trans person starts competing in them. What theyre doing is really obvious.

I dont think the trans athletes in sports is a right vs left thing at all?

Good luck convincing the illogical and those who argue with an emotional bias in the subject. They view all this as political and aren't sports fans themselves, because if they were the latter, then they'd understand why it's an unfair competitive advantage and not a good thing. It doesn't matter what evidence you provide, their political bias will blind them of the facts.

Now I'll probably be called -phobic and alt-right, when no one knows me, my experiences, my opinion of the trans subject... or what gender I personally identify as.

I dunno why youre doing the fake shock thing instead of elaborating.

Do you think most left leaning people think trans women athletes should compete with cis women?

I dont. Thus, I dont think its a left vs right thing.

But I dont want to derail the topic, so we can agree to disagree.
