Yeah, I'm still optimistic they'll have learned and will improve with this next one, but if they've just stopped making traditional Zelda games that would be a massive disappointment.

BOTW succeeds by simply focusing on the fundamentals on what makes an open world game fun. Mucking around and finding things.

A lot of open world games are more designed like a buffet of content. Go to these mission types and do the thing. Here's a whole bunch of skill trees and things to work towards as well. Don't forget about our epic story!

It's not that the latter design is bad but it was getting tired and also lost a bit of focus on what the strengths of an open world game can actually be. Providing freedom to the player.

I think it's an interesting dynamic overall. Even when I think of GTA it doesn't bombard with the player with too much missions and 'content' to do at once.

The main strength of BotW is the open world itself.

The world feels organic and feels like an actual breathing thing.
It's probably the only open world game I've played where I don't want to use the fast travel system.

Every location of the map feels intentional and houses something interesting and unique.

Compared to a Ubisoft game like Ass Creed where I'm just staring at the mini map constantly and sprinting to get to the next objective as fast as possible.

I think it's up there. Definitely my favorite of this gen so far.

God, BotW online discourse pisses me off so much. Has anyone made one credible point against BotW itt? That game is so so much more than a Ubisoft game with a Zelda skin tacked on.

Breath of the wild would be one of the best games of all time if it didnt have the name Zelda in its title, has the towns/settlements 3-5 times bigger. Maybe double the towns and have more npcs. Game would be soooo good.

I still really enjoyed botw and 100%'d twice minus the korok seeds.

Honestly, looking back, I've only genuinely LOVED two of the 3D Zelda games--OOT and TP.

Wind Waker was ruined by the sailing tedium and the lack of dungeons--honestly, it feels like proto-BotW.

MM was ruined by its time gimmick and refusal to have a straightforward structure. It's just too weird for me. I know some people love it, but I sure don't.

Skyward Sword needs no introduction. Repetitive, ruined by motion controls, story sucks, etc.

BotW is just a generic Open World game with a Zelda mod slapped on. The four "dungeons" are all the same tile-set with the same navigation gimmick (move a piece to make something wacky happen), there's no sense of reward for doing anything (except for the Master Sword, which was fun but came so late in the game that it felt like a secret, or a New Game+ reward), the bosses were boring, and--again--the story sucked. The flashbacks were cool, but the present day timeline had almost nothing interesting going on. Oh, and the breakable weapons knee-capped the combat system and made the entire game less fun to play.

i personally think botw is really forgettable. but i also think that of a lot of the more recent zeldas, like ss and tp.

there was just a lack of charm and wonder. everything being so open just made it less personal and relatable, to me. dungeons sucked too.

BotW was the freshest a Zelda game has felt in years, and was the most fun open world I've ran around in since Just Cause 2

Idk why people want to go back to playing the 15th iteration of the Link to the Past formula, I love Zelda but that shit was getting incredibly stale by the time of Skyward Sword

Zelda was in a very bad place before BotW. Skyward Sword didn't even feel like a video game, it was more like an interactive story on rails. Press A to continue to the next scene!

A big part of why it was so successful was because it was such a massive departure away from that sort of "game" and towards the original adventure for NES where you get to just wander around looking for cool shit.

You might be right about the metacritic thing. Not sure, I'll have to think on it more. I enjoyed the hell out of BotW, though. But it might be that I never woulda even played it if it wasn't a Zelda game.

It's too soon to believe BotW will be the new standard going forward. BotW2 only exists because it started as DLC, but got a bit too ambitious and ended up requiring too many changes to be made to the main game.

Immortals: Fenyx Rising is a Ubisoft game created explicitly in the image of Breath of the Wild.

I think it's super cluttered and the combat is both more numerous and tedious than BotW, but funnily enough it does only reach the low 80's at best on Metacritic.

Gaming would be a much better hobby if there were 15 iterations of LttP period IMO.

BotW is a fine direction that needs some refining. Weapons Breaking can go directly to hell.

BotW itself is an alright game that got beaten by Horizon: Zero Dawn during its week of release.

People love throwing out the "if it wasn't Zelda" line like that's a clever point.

Yes, it's Zelda. The long established videogame institution with the rich lore, the memorable characters, the loved locations, the continuity between games, the various timelines, the entire library of incredibly consistently great games.

If it wasn't Zelda it wouldn't be Zelda.

it does a lot of things right, it avoids having a bunch of trackers and icons and quests that would otherwise make the game feel overwhelming with its number of things to find and do
the map doesn't show you everything and there's a lot of stuff you can find on your own
it's good at guiding you to things without being too handholdy
it lacks the cluttered feel that many open-world games have, but just like the others it can feel way too big (spatially) sometimes

Yeah...long-running franchises kinda need to be ever-changing in order to not keep things stale. Some people rag on the newest God of War for feeling too different, but to be quite honest...the old GoW games were getting stale as fuck by the third mainline game. They needed to change direction and IMO it was for the better.
