growing up I was taught you need to never fight or argue with your superiors , go above and beyond and offer more of your time and that was what it meant to be a good, reliable adult only by the time I actually made to adulthood did I start realizing doing this just makes you tired and even if you are nobody gives a shit about you being tired you will do what you're there to do, you will not complain, you will not ask to go to the bathroom, to sit down for a little bit or even look tired, that's unprofessional, that's lazy ect.

The only thing I learned about "going above and beyond" at work is that you get more work than everyone else and the same or less pay. Boss might (keyword: might) throw a quick thank you your way while he collects his bonus off your work and you're just burned out.

Most annoying thing about these words, my boomer, retired mother just spits out "nobody wants to work anymore" and "people are quiet quitting now" forgetting that she retired early and did the bare minimum leading up to it because she was growing to hate her job.

Quiet quitting is just working.

they pay you for 9-5, mon through fri. So they get you from 9-5c mon-fri. Everything ese is extra.

the fact that this is now being talked about as bad, lazy or any other negative connotation by the Fox News and Wall Street journal types is a huge gaslighting mockery everybody is falling for.

people used to go the extra mile in exchange for promotions, raises and job security. But employers dont give that anymore no matter how hard you work, so why do it?

trust me, nobody ever thought I wish I had finished that report earlier or I regret not sending that email on Saturday on their death bed or at their brothers funeral.

lets read this piece of shit article;

Quiet quitters are allegedly an epidemic that is allegedly changing the workplace and, allegedly, making bosses very mad.

imagine the audacity, I am your boss and I am very mad because youre doing exactly what you were hired (and paid) to do

this is some abusive gaslighting. But lets look at the article this one links to (https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-backlash-against-quiet-quitting-is-getting-loud-11661391232)

Kevin OLeary, co-star on ABCs Shark Tank and chairman of OShares ETFs, called quiet quitting a horrible approach to building a career: You have to go beyond because you want to. Thats how you achieve success, he said in a CNBC video essay.

this is some grade A bullshit. If working hard and going above and beyond is what gave people success those people working 3 shifts at fast food places, 18 hour days would own the company by now, or those nurses at hospitals that work literally for 48 hours in a row on the regular would own the hospital by now.

do not fall for this bullshit, most people who make it to the highest rungs of society are all there thanks to their connections and family money.

They want you to grind yourself to nothing because healthy work practices hurt their bottom line.

yes. And they will abuse, gaslight and conspire in order to normalize it.

have you noticed that since workers got a little bit of bargaining power back because of the pandemic suddenly all companies began crying wolf about an upcoming recession, every day, despite it not happening yet? Even some BOFA fat cat inner communication leaked where he was hoping for a recession so employee bargaining power went back to normal

This line of thinking seems to be generally limited to either white collar jobs. For the blue collar jobs I work there is reward for going above and beyond. But the pay bump is almost negligible for the most part. I'd rather work 1 less hour a day them up my overall paycheck by 10%.

No one's denying the principle, but it's only a thing in white collar because your pay doesn't change for doing more.

I haven't worked retail or fast food in a while, but if you have a four hour shift at mcdonalds or whatever, bossman asks you to stay another four hours, you get paid for eight hours.

In white collar, if you do more than your job and/or work outside your normal 9-5, your pay does not increase commensurate to the additional work like it does at Mcdonalds.

I mean, I don't doubt it happens, but for practical purposes of this conversation, it's a safe assumption that we're assuming salaried 9-5 where the pay doesn't change relative to the hours worked.

Hmmm, now where have I heard this from. Oh right.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drapetomania

Drapetomania was a supposed mental illness that, in 1851, American physician Samuel A. Cartwright hypothesized as the cause of enslaved Africans fleeing captivity.[1]: 41 This hypothesis centered around the belief that slavery was such an improvement upon the lives of slaves that only those suffering from some form of mental illness would wish to escape.[2][3]

It shows.
Wage theft is rampant in fast food and retail.
Not to mention lack of respect for schedules and worker rights.
Some places actively punish you for going over hours, others all but force you to work overtime. And not always on the clock.

It is illegal. And it happens very, very often.
It's a pretty big issue within retail and food workers for anyone that has been listening for the last 5 or so years.

Businesses are greedy as fuck and don't typically give a fuck about their workers.

When actively telling your boss you need more bodies doesn't work, scaling back to doing the work of 2 people instead of 5 still doesn't do the job and you just get blamed for being lazy. For doing double work.

This. To add on, a lot of people just have issues with boundaries. If your boss calls when you're off for the day, why the fucking hell are you answering your phone to begin with? And if they want to fire you for not answering then that's on them, not you. Get yourself one of a million other retail jobs because that's the upside to retail - everyone needs workers.
