I think it's fair to be concerned that the game might be trying to rely on the popularity of previous games' protagonists to prop itself up instead of succeeding on its own merits.

While it might be reading too much into the game's first trailer, it's still a valid concern when that's what they decided to lead with and highlight.

Shouldn't you wait for confirmation before any of this, though? Like, people are already assuming "old characters = bad" without knowing what the older characters entail. If Knuckles shows up in Sonic Frontier in a trailer cutscene I don't think people should be automatically groaning unless you just flat out hate Knuckles. Like, it's one thing to go "Marth sucks. Fuck Marth" and hate it for that reason, but I just don't see the point in jumping the gun on so little information.

I think it's not that unusual for japanese IPs to bring back classic characters and pay respect to them as part of series/franchise milestones. Might just be a cultural difference that westerners are getting up in arms about this and thinking it's automatically mobile gaming nonsense.

Personally, I'm rooting for Idunn. I would love to see more of what happened to her after the story of FE6 concluded.

I thought Tiki's inclusion in Awakening was very tastefully done, it didn't feel like she was just crammed into the story... nor do I think all of the first time Awakening fans that were brought into the franchise really gave a shit about the 200 year old game that she originated from. But who knows, maybe Nintendo was really banking on the idea that all five Shadow Dragon and Fire Emblem 1 fans were going to propel Awakening sales into the stratosphere. Just like how all 700 people who have played FE4 and haven't died of old age are going to carry the sales of this game.

Most of the character designs aren't inspired but I don't take issue with them really. It's hilarious just how garish the MC's toothpaste hair is though, just make it solely red or blue and they look so much better.

Not stoked on the integration of past characters, but if they limit it to the 12ish we saw in the trailer and they let the main roster breathe on its own right I could end up fine with it. Overall it's an underwhelming impression but I'll give it a shot and hope for the best gameplay wise.

I'd say most FE fans know exactly what they want. People's reaction to Fates, Shadows of Valentia, and Three Houses lined up pretty closely with pre-release knowledge (if anything, people were giving Fates the benefit of the doubt too much).

Nah, I'm talking about "fans" not the actual fans of the series. The ones that loudly moan that THIS release is going to be the death of what is one of Nintendo's biggest franchises and then the game winds up being good or great. They've been very vocal since Fates, which had problems but was definitely a big success, and there were even a lot of vocal people that seemed to hate Awakening, despite it being inarguably the biggest success the franchise had seen up until that point, at least in the west.

Point is, these games keep coming out and are generally 8/10 or better, but there's a vocal part of the so-called fandom that just cannot ever seem to be satisfied. Genuinely I think the only Fire Emblem *anything* that's been less than stellar has been the first Warriors spinoff.

So I dunno, main character looks dumb and "booooo Marth" just seems like the same typical garbo we often get, and if the cycle repeats like it tends to, the game's going to be good and sell well.

The thing that seperate this from those is that it's a release in a post Heroes world and that it implies it may be taking a Heroes influences. Beyond just having a bunch of old characters as gear, having said characters wielding their Heroes exclusive weapons in the trailer does not assuage those worries. People DO NOT want a mobile gacha game to influence a mainline title, and that's what makes this different from all the normal "boo hoo get your anime out of my Fire Emblem" trash takes.

Now, these worries could be completely off the mark, but all we have is this trailer, and that's what this trailer puts off.

Gacha mechanics are NOT the same thing as "this game has characters from the older entries in the series." All comparison to heroes are shallow as hell. The rings seem to be a major part of the story, you're clearly meant to obtain them throughout normal gameplay. Where is the connection to "ugh gacha grr grr grr"?

It was completely shit in both concept and execution and made Fates worse but, you know, nothing to do with Heroes!

While that is generally true, Fire Emblem people are a particular type of "never satisfied". It's a hard fandom to really be a part of, it seems nobody is ever happy. The FE fanbase was extremely satisfied by Three Houses. It wasn't satisfied by Fates because Fates didn't deserve it.

Likely because there's too many sword units. And besides, bruh, you can use a character design that was from a game without it automatically being "influenced" by core elements of that thing.

But It's rather just have another game like Path of Radiance

The DLC explaining why Severa, Inigo and Owain are in Fates is considered one of the better parts of Fates story. One of the few positive things people will say about the story.

There's already 3 games which do it: Awakening, TMS, and Heroes. There's zero indication that Engage is adding anything meaningfully new or different to this idea, so pitching "reusing past characters" as the main selling point of the game isn't exciting at all anymore. It's on Engage to prove it has a fresh take on this compared to previous games and isn't just a cheap nostalgia ploy.

I'm not too hyped about the old cast members, but I reserve the right to reverse that judgment when I see what the gameplay and story are like. It seems like it might be closer to a TMS/Persona setup than Awakening, which could still be cool, especially if you can move old people between new people for ~*~CUSTOMIZATION~*~

yes the MC hair is dumb but I love it. I like vtubers, this kinda character design is right up my alley.

I'm not entirely sure it's gonna be a new fave but it's probably worth a shot (and I don't buy many new major games, so "worth a shot" is high bar for me lol)

I don't follow these things super closely, but hasn't FE been doing pretty well and getting a pretty big push the past few years? You've got Heroes and Warriors and 3 Houses expansions and none of that reads to me like "one flop away from death"

They look like anime characters to me which is what VTubers look like anyways. At least I havent seen any that didnt just look like an anime character anyways

And honestly I get the concern of gacha influence because this is the game industry and also this is Nintendo, but I think making snap judgments is pretty dumb when the only info we have is a single trailer that does not display any gacha elements.

I hope this game gets a fair shake. The character design thing is exactly the type of thing that can give something way more negative press than it really deserves. I'm not a fan myself, but if the game plays good and has good mechanics, if the story is good, then I'm fine taking the good with the bad.
