It was the random guard that Daemon killed earlier.

That's right, someone had to play the part of Laenor's corpse after all. Not sure if it was a guard or random servant though.

watching parents age on their deathbeds is so difficult

viserys sticking up for rhaenyra one last time is such a great send-off

alicent was always destined to be rhaenyra's enemy of course, but the way they triggered her with the prophecy feels a little manufactured

I agree. Dramatic Irony doesn't really do it for me. If a simple explanation of what happened can resolve a conflict, then it's not as compelling a conflict to me.

agreed really, really good episode

It feels like the whole series to this point has been the big question of "ok, Viserys MUST be dying this episode, there's no way he survives this" only to see him back the next episode. And now we've finally got the culmination of that, to the point that this feels like the moment the series spins on its head, even after these huge time jumps.

It's compelling that there's clearly no heroes here. Alicent is cruel and petty and will defend her line above all else, and her sons are the worst (particularly lil' One Eye over there). Daemon can be great but can just as easily be bloodthirsty at a moments notice. Rhaenyra is the closest thing we have to a protagonist right now, and even she is calculating and morally grey. At least her sons are decent, but I feel like one or both of them will snap at some point.

and the way they presented Viserys this episode, both visually and in his performance, should win some Emmys. I'm a sucker for a cool mask, and that gold half-mask over a face eaten by disease? Chills, especially with how much the actor sold it this episode

I get an odd laugh out of how casually murderhappy everyone is during this timeframe. Tournaments devolve into everyone chopping each other up, the king's brother beheads another royal at a formal meeting, makes a quip and later there's dinner

Granted the OG series wasn't much of a happier place, but there was more of a veneer of "This shit is probably an incident"

I actually like that the guy was beheaded though. There's been so much loose talk and outright murder (eg Criston) and nobody actually punished for any of it that it was starting to feel like treason or like laws in general just weren't a thing.

The walk to the throne is one of my favorite TV scenes in years; Paddy Considine better at least get nominated for an award when the time comes. Perfect way for Viserys to go out - the first and only time he was ever truly worthy of the crown was also the time that he least looked the part.

oh, and perhaps my absolute single favorite moment of the episode:

viserys ascending the iron throne, and then saying that he's confused.

but not confused because of his own physical/mental state - confused because these motherfuckers really thought they could try to raise this succession issue in his house while he's still king

i will say, i absolutely loved this viserys and did not love F&B

however, making a character richer doesn't always necessarily make the text better

in game of thrones, they made tywin and shae fuller, more sympathetic characters - but that made the way their storylines ended more puzzling and was worse for the more important character in tyrion

It seemed to me that the dragon's pursuit of revenge despite the protest of another mirrors Aemond's own story this episode. Those animalistic instincts of vengeance will fail you -- how are you going to fault the dragon for what you were just doing?

Anyway I only know a few things from GoT but HotD was an interesting first season.

I liked Aemond's reaction a lot actually. He's spent his entire life doing everything he wanted with no repercussions because his mom covered up every crime he committed.

This was definitely him thinking he could continue to do that, sadistically tormenting Lucerys in the same way he had when they were kids, but he completely lost control and in doing so knows he'll forced to face the consequences of his actions for the first time in his life. He single-handedly committed the first strike of a war, and all because he wasn't as in control as he thought he was

That was brilliant.

I love them doing the parallel episodes with 9 and 10, greens and blacks. It really sets up such strong comparisons.

I'm not planning on reading the book, so don't clarify anything using it to me, but just comparing the two - Alicent tries to be in control as much as she can, but she's so completely a tool. And Rhaenyra, in spite of being a woman who has been bandied about at times in her life, shows that she is strong enough to be Queen. Aegon is a lout - Jacerys is smart and shows wisdom.

I hope Otto gets punked bad in this. He's the worst.

In hindsight, it was incredibly naive of Rhaenyra and Damon to see how sick Viserys was and then decide to go back to Dragonstone anyway. Like what did they think would happen when he died without them there? I get there was a lot of bad blood between the kids and tensions would've boiled over very quickly if they were all living together again, but if nothing else, one of Damon/Rhaenyra should've stayed behind.
