The word is an S word aimed at Native American women. I personally wasn't aware of it was slur. So these people might not have been aware either. but they then went and doubled down .

Never heard of this word before. But if the modern day Native american finds it offensive and the movie itself doesnt use the word then the reviewer shouldn't have used it.

this, I have not come across the word since the eighties, and it was from comics and movies from a decade or two before

never knew it was racist, then again I did not think anyone in this day or age would use it

wow not even an apology, but at least they acknowledged it, guess the reviewer really hated the movie

There have been several places with this word in their name that have renamed themselves over the past few years to get away from the word.

I just can't see this as anything other than intentional. It's an archaic enough word that, in my view, they likely looked it up and used it specifically because they wanted to use an offensive term that people might not catch onto. The "apology" is utterly laughable and just confirms to me that they knew what they were doing.

I'd be a lot more charitable to their ignorance of their review wasn't mostly just being mad about the main character being a woman and if their apology actually was one.

But frankly Prey has brought out a lot of journalists and reviewers using less than appropriate language, though often not maliciously. All of which could have been avoided if these people just consulted the AP Stylebook, which any journalists/reviewer/writer worth a shit should be doing if they are covering subject matter about a culture they are unfamiliar with. But internet journalist basically gave up having standards.

Just for fun let's see what it says:

American Indians, Native Americans Both are acceptable terms in general references for those in the U.S. when referring to two or more people of different tribal affiliations. For individuals, use the name of the tribe; if that information is not immediately available, try to obtain it. He is a Navajo commissioner. She is a member of the Nisqually Indian Tribe. He is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. Some tribes and tribal nations use member; others use citizen. If in doubt, use citizen. Avoid words such as wampum, warpath, powwow, teepee, brave, squaw, etc., which can be disparaging and offensive. In Alaska, the Indigenous groups are collectively known as Alaska Natives.

First Nation is the preferred term for native tribes in Canada.

Indian is used to describe the peoples and cultures of the South Asian nation of India. Do not use the term as a shorthand for American Indians.

IIRC, Geeks and Gamers is the guy who did a positive review of The Last Jedi, but when he saw the fan reaction against it, tried to wipe out all evidence of this opinion and has been doing the neo Nazi nerd grift ever since. Surprised he didn't use a worse slur (also it is obviously a slur).

I could be thinking of some other neo Nazi nerd grifter though.

Yes. It's at its best a very anachronistic term for an old indigenous woman. It's steeped in racial colonialism prejudice, and is so far from acceptable that I even forgot it existed.

If the n-word was used to describe a black person in a period piece would it not be racist to just follow the movie's example and use it as a descriptor of the character in a review?

If they had used the SQ word in the movie, then it would have been the word for woman (unless we suddenly got white men saying it), and the reviewer might not know that it was a slur.
The N word cant have that "luxury".

I agree if they had changed it. But they chose not to. In which case they knew just as much as one would in regards to the n-word.

Even if it was used in the movie, it would have been used in context with the period. Any contemporary review using that word doesn't get that luxury, because they should know the historical context and the offensiveness of the word. Nobody should be using that word in any context now.
