Now, I DO think a lot of that is that the generation specific battle gimmick has reached critical mass, and people are being turned off by the crystallization thing. The minute details of the gameplay changes are being overshadowed by the focus of the direct being a big stinker.

I also don't get how you can say this while also complaining the series doesn't have enough shakeups (I didn't play Legends so I'll put it aside). I know everyone is sick of having a new major mechanic every gen but honestly Gamefreak has yet to find a GOOD one to iterate on. I miss Megas but they had a serious design and gameplay problem of having to choose from a limited selection of individually crafted powerups. The subsequent mechanics trying to universalize it is good imo, it's just that Z-moves were both clunky and unappealing and Dynamax was TOO BIG. This crystal thing is visually unappealing but honestly I think simpler might be better for once. Totally get why people are down on it but I think it's got a lot of potential to dodge those past mistakes.

I've been a Pokemon skeptic for a while but it's weird to me to see people so down. The second set of games on a console is generally where the games hit their stride. It really just seems like people are burned on the failure of SwSh and the very questionable drip marketing Pokemon games have now.

Cetitan is still cool, I'm just bummed it's pure Ice. When I first watched the trailer on my phone, I thought it had more purple coloration and was gonna be Ice/Poison. =/

Also I appreciate it's more monster-like qualities. Like it's a whale with arms and legs and spikes and has a stupid mouth and is a great big ol' monstrosity lemme use one already.

I think Cetitan is cool and would look amazing if they do scaling well. Look at the stats on that thing. Its over 14ft tall and 1,500 pounds. This thing makes Snorlax look like a baby

Actually you know what I'm just gonna say it.

Directs are bad. They are just bad. Once the initial novelty wore off they just became a way to cynically raise expectations and then underdeliver to drive engagement. I can't remember the last time I saw a "good" direct and yet I'll still watch them if I'm around when one's on because they're mind poison.

Hype is useless. Down with hype.

The shakeup Pokemon needs are at the fundamentals, a battle gimmick will never be enough and is just a distraction from time that could be spent actually evolving the formula.

When you get right down to the core and strip away all the colorful paint and gimmicks, Pokmon has been the same game since RB. It's layered more and more icing and sprinkles onto that vanilla cake, but it's still a vanilla cake. I'm not asking for pizza instead of cake, but I'd at least like to get some chocolate at least once.

I lost control of that analogy about 2/3 through, but whatever.

Personally I'm an extremist and am never going to REALLY be satisfied unless the games are no longer turn based. The world would implode if that ever happened, though. That'd be pizza!

The last Xenoblade Chronicles 3 direct was absolutely incredible! I've never pre-ordered a game so fast after a presentation.

If the trailer is anything to go by, scaling is as bad as it's been in every game other than Let's Go.

Sword Shield sold a ton BECAUSE of hype, it certainly wasn't because the game was super great! That game looked crazy good before it came out, and was a huge visual overhaul....by Pokemon standards. It was the first time I had been excited to get a Pokmon game since...Silver!

Are we talking about the same Sword and Shield? The game basically looked like Sun and Moon in HD. I don't know what visual overhaul you're talking about, and I see more of an overhaul here than in SwSh.

Didnt you play through that whole series in like a week? You might be the target audience for that one lol

But yeah I did skip that one because XB2 failed to hold my interest and the information I needed to know if XB3 would be worth my time was always gonna come from after release. And hey, it sounds like it's pretty good! I'm looking forward to playing it in a year or two when I have time and they've probably released some DLC.

I came out of it thinking XB1 was OK and XB2 was kind of bad, lol. Basically all my XB hype up until that point was from the DLC and even that had a major problem.

I was the target audience in that I was the one who needed reassurance!

i've seen a few LtM playthrough topics and blazing through the games fast is pretty typical

I'm actually super surprised the region isn't going to be largely uninhabited. After the DLC and Arceus, I was seriously only expecting a few cities and then just a bunch of open wilderness. You can also see various racing flags spread throughout that probably deal with one of the three progression routes.

Ironically this actually makes the game look small and empty

Yeah, the core gameplay staying the same and being solid is really all the games have going for them at this point. It'd be dumb to change it up and risk losing the one thing they still have.

This all depends on whether or not you think they still have it at all.

I think they don't, thus my stance.

I think the only change I see as a true advancement in this series in memory is the removal of random battles.

I cant speak for others, but one thing I always wanted was challenging gym leaders. Like Id like them all to have full teams or most of them to at least have more than 2-4 Pokmon before the post game. The leaders basically feel as easy as a regular trainer otherwise.

They even handled the removal of random battles in a stupid way, with them still existing and certain Pokmon only being able to be found in them. Hopefully that's not a thing in SV like it was in SwSh.

It'll never happen, but I'd love if the games had some challenge modes built-in, like ironmon/nuzlocke or randomisers. Hell, even the option of being more difficult would be something.

This does suck but IIRC those weren't truly random, right? I mean the pokemon themselves were random, but you saw the shaking grass.

My beef is with walking around and getting into battles completely out of nowhere, which I don't personally see as having a place in the RPG genre anymore.

Yeah, it wasn't truly random, except for the Pokemon you encountered. It's not a big deal if you're not trying to complete the Pokedex, but if you are, it's annoying to see them miss the mark so badly.

I may want changes but I don't think Gamefreak capable of them if they tried. They made that Little Town Hero game and it was horrendous.

It's a real monkeys paw situation.

My personal vague direction I'd want to see is a move towards more of an ATB thing at the very least. I'm not asking for Tales here.

Pokmon is still fundamentally a game for children, if they turned it into an action game it would be extremely easy and uninteresting

I can never understand people that are asking the Pokemon main series games to change. Not even after Arceus proved me "wrong".

This is why the spin-offs exist. And you have so many of them. In so many different genres
Racing, Fighting, MOBA, gacha, tactics, clicker (whatever genre Magikarp Jump is), photo taking, Mystery Dungeon, puzzles, mini games, cards, games that play themselves (Quest and Rumble) hell even a fucking game about brushing your teeth

the Arceus battle system was also complete shit

They've made action games. Drill Dozer is actually one of my favorites.
