I liked it but I think they went a little heavy on the "humans/capitalists are opportunistic to the point of being outright evil and will literally burn down everything around them in pursuit of money" message they were selling

No problem with the message itself, it's just at a certain point I was like "alright already I get it"

It was thoroughly unremarkable as a story/movie, but excellent as eye candy. I probably won't bother with the sequel, since I don't particularly feel like going to a theatre to be able to appreciate the visuals and my home TV is too small for that, but I won't necessarily turn it down if somebody else wants to watch it with me.

It was decent enough. The 3D was incredibly well-done, the performances were solid, the CGI was topshelf for the time, and the action was great. It didn't change my life or anything, but I paid $10 and was entertained for a couple hours, I consider that a good bargain.

If it shows up on TV and I can watch it for free, maybe but probably not.

If someone else I know really, really wants to watch it and kind of pressures me into watching it with them, maybe.

But of my own accord, by any means that requires me to pay to see it? Fuck no.

Definitely not in theaters - at this point I'm not even willing to go to the movies to watch films I'm actually excited about, let alone ones I'm not.

Is it really overrated? The consensus is basically "it was OK. Effects were neat" Everyone basically saw it in theaters because it looked cool, but it had no real lasting cultural imprint. It's why it's so bizarre that Disney bought the theme park rights to it, and opened a land dedicated to Pandora when it was least relevant culturally. Even now, people will go and be like "Oh rad", then proceeded to not buy any Avatar merch.

DeathMagnetic80 posted...
Is it really overrated? The consensus is basically "it was OK. Effects were neat"

It was overrated at the time it came out when people were talking about it as if it was the greatest movie ever created by humans, and people were talking about committing suicide because of how depressed they were that Pandora wasn't real and they could never go there. It's also what sparked the boom of everyone assuming 3D was the wave of the future for films. It had a huge impact... in the short-term.

Time since has led a lot of people to reevaluate how they felt about it. Partly because people realized that it was a fairly mediocre movie apart from the visuals, and that sort of thing doesn't tend to hold up over time. Partly because the 3D boom led to a 3D bust. Partly because all the furries moved on and found other characters they wanted to fuck and draw Rule 34 of. And partly because waiting 12 years to produce a sequel left even the most enthusiastic fans somewhat apathetic.

The opinion most people have of it today really isn't the same as it was back when it first came out.

And if we're going to be honest, as much as a lot of us assume the sequels are going to be bombs because no one cares about it any more, the mouth-breathers will probably come out in droves to watch the pretty pictures again, and there's a good chance people will praise it to the moon as being the films that "helped save movie theaters after Covid" or other effusive praise. Because people are stupid, and history repeats itself because we never really learn from our mistakes.

The problem with "the 3D boom/bust" is that a lot of films were converted to 3D instead of being filmed that way. When a film is conceived and planned to take advantage of that technique, it shows, the same way it shows if it wasn't.

I thought it looked ridiculously pretty in 3D, but didn't really care for it otherwise. No real interest in the sequel unless it elevates special effects in a similar way, though even then going to a theater right now is a very tough sell.

Honestly, I feel like that's probably one of the better ways use the franchise. As much as the plot was forgettable, people liked looking at it. To that end, building a theme park around it so people can wander through the nice-looking world and explore the interesting scenery and creatures is playing to that strength.

That said, an open-world video game would probably be the better approach. Generally much cheaper than trying to physically build a world to explore, much greater potential for scale and worldbuilding, no actual need to put together a more compelling story than a barebones excuse for exploring the world... It probaby won't happen (or if it does, it won't be done well), but I can see that being better than attempts to squeeze more films out of a universe that never had much going for it aside from looking cool.

The land itself is cool, it's super weird though because there's a huge disconnect since the movie had no real memorable characters, so its just "Here's random Avatar stuff, with zero characters from the movie", its also SLIGHTLY eerie because you're supposed to be on Pandora, where the Na'vi have agreed to let humans come again and work together with them, but there's you know, no Navi anywhere except in some pictures and the two rides.

Oh hey. Of course, it's Ubisoft, so it'll be a bunch of copy-pasted busywork quests punctuated by the occasional Radio Tree to climb and published by a company that willingly shelters sexual predators, but it'll probably be pretty.

Presumably because hiring and costuming actual people to populate it is expensive, especially where the original costumes were just CG.
