If fuel companies lower them, the government should institute taxes putting them back to $5+. People should feel the impact that locomotion has on climate change in their wallets. Basically fuel should be treated like cigarette taxes.

Respectfully stop talking. That exact line of reasoning is why gas prices are so high in the first place.

Id agree with this if it didn't effect people who need to work jobs they don't really get to choose what they want. And those jobs usually assume they're accessible with use of a car. If they're not, they'll probably move on of you can't ge as accessible as they want. And the gas prices effects the underpaid already too.

Seems like pretty good line of reasoning. Policy should punish inefficiencies like suburbs far from work centers, the people partaking in that should pay the real cost of the luxury.

Yeah because fuel prices don't impact the prices of food and literally everything else that is shipped by truck.

Let alone the "fuck poor people who have to drive to work" attitude.

Look you can say all you want how paying more for gas hurts people's wallets, obviously that's true, but whats that compared to the billions of people living on the equator who are going to become climate refugees if there's no direct funded action against global warming? The first world needs to take responsibility for its oversized carbon footprint.

Average Joe has very little say in city-planning and public transportation availability. Of course we should be moving away from fossil fuels but having politicians intentionally fucking over the people who are needed in order for the country to function isn't exactly a smart move.

Nope, because even though your heart's (mostly) in the right place, that idea is fucking stupid. Our use of fossil fuels is so ingrained into how our country operates that doing what you suggest would break it even more than it already is.

What should happen is that we focus on developing the alternatively-powered vehicles we already have to be better and more widely available as well as affordable, and trying to find all-new methods of transportation that don't cause as much harm.

People aren't going to switch without incentive to. There's a reason we've used gas, it works really well.

Americas love affair with cars was a mistake. Nowadays you need to use a car, shipping everything by truck is needed and infrastructure reflects this fact. We will need to completely change how we live to make mass transit viable. Or replace all the gas vehicles with electric ones AND all the infrastructure that that would require. But thats not exactly possible with our current technology. Were stuck.

The incentive should be more tax credits for EVs and other alternative energy sources. Not adding taxes to a commodity that for now is essential.

Theres also the problem of where our electricity comes from. Right now its mostly coal or natural gas. So replacing gas cars with electric ones doesnt do that much when its still being powered by a dirty power grid.

Did you know that the Japanese government has given the ok to dump millions of gallons of radioactive water into the ocean because they have no other option?
Even with modern reactors, accidents still happen. Knowing this, do you want a nuclear power plant in your back yard?

We should absolutely be dumping resources into modern nuclear power plants and spamming them out. They are safe and clean and I would be fine living next to one. Waste storage is fucking easy too, just hollow out a mountain. Alaska should utilize there massive swaths of land and mountains and build a bunch of plants, export the excess energy.

Fuel prices affect everything. Youre not going to wave a magic wand or tax fuel users to death just to push your agenda. Good luck engineering a plane that can fly more than an hour on battery power. Also mining and repurposing of lithium into batteries is damaging to the environment. And like 80% of the worlds energy is still a product of coal, oil and gas so your Tesla is still using polluting by using dirty energy
