Well at the end of the day defund its not a good idea. More like what funds there have to be allocated in the best way possible instead of buying police tanks and heavy armament.

I'm going to guess because there has finally been some pushback from people against cops being able to beat and kill whoever they want without consequences. Remember that entire Buffalo special unit that resigned because people got mad that they they knocked down an ancient ass old man and cracked his head on the pavement for no reason?

Regardless of funding, police have always been selective about what they actually care about. When I was a child, my dad was going less than 5 over the speed limit on a highway. Cop hit lights and pulled us over. In the process, there was a freshly overturned vehicle that the cop ignored. My dad even asked if maybe that person needed assistance. Got only attitude from the cop and told to worry about his own reckless driving.

Nothing in the article actually says how Seattle PD has been "defunded" or why they'd have no choice but to ignore rape cases for the foreseeable future.

So LOL at "No one read the article"

It seems to be deliberately vague so people can go "Look how the anti-police crowd has made it impossible for the police to do the jobs they want them to do! They've had to completely stop investigating new sexual assaults!"

From different articles, not the garb one in OP, it seems like most of the staffing shortages are from retirement/officers quitting. Now if they're in a hiring freeze due to the budget I can see how an argument can be made against "defund the police" (counter argument is a better allocation of resources).

Edit: it is true Seattle reduced the police budget. I'm all for critiquing the police but facts are important.

Even if you "funded" the cops, that money would just go to buying more suped up chargers or hatever cars they use now, more military equipment that will just be used against protestors, and more OT for cops to lie about or just fuck off during their extra hours.

I was doing something similar. Just because one article doesn't mention something doesn't mean it didn't happen. Yes, the article should have gone into details.

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with it, just pointing out that it did happen.

https://www.aclu-wa.org/story/follow-the-money-policing-series

In 2021, Mayor Durkan and the City Council made rather modest cuts to the Seattle Police Departments (SPD) 2021 Adopted Budget. Many of the cuts resulted from transferring functions to other departments, which means the money was not freed up for other uses. 911 dispatch was moved from SPD to the newly minted Community Safety and Communications Center (CSCC), the Parking Enforcement Unit was moved to the Seattle Department Transportation (SDOT),[i] and the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) was moved to its own standalone department.

The link goes into more detail, but it seems like the Seattle police department really is just choosing to not prioritize sexual assault cases over other issues. I wonder if their focus is on maintaining their toys.

Just on a related note:
https://bit.ly/3mdQJVK

After nearly half a year of debate, the Seattle City Council finally allowed the Seattle Police Department (SPD) to spend even more of its money on getting more cops.

The council voted 6 to 3 on Councilmember Sara Nelsons resolution to promise that the council will lift spending restrictions on anticipated 2022 salary savings so that the cops can offer hiring bonuses. The resolution does not indicate a specific dollar amount or fund a specific bonus program from the $4.5 million in salary savings, but rather leaves it up to the Mayor to develop one with councils approval. Frankly, whatever. I dont really care what its used for, Nelson said.
...
While this resolution does not direct new money to the department, the progressive opposition (Councilmembers Kshama Sawant, Tammy Morales, and Teresa Mosqueda) took issue with the rest of the council allowing cops to spend salary savings on bonuses, especially in a moment when the City is asking departments to prepare for as much as a 6% budget reduction.

As budget chair, Mosqueda repeatedly argued that approving the resolution and the ordinance would mean even less money left over at the end of the year to fulfill 2023 budget priorities.

On top of that, Sawant reminded the council that cops remain one of the best-paid government workers, making more than double that of social workers who actually turn peoples lives around, she said. For scope, the fund freed up by Herbolds ordinance could pay the annual salary of about 20 social workers at REACH, a homelessness outreach provider.

Why should police be the sole city department immune from budget decreases?
