Luckily for Seattle they recently elected a new mayor who is pro Police and pledged to actually do something about the crazy spike in crimes all over the city. We will see if he can find a way to make good on that promise.

Great, can't wait for them to let children be shot and then not investigate when they're sexually assaulted, but earn more money for it.

Someone show me an article proving they were actually defunded. They weren't. The proposed reductions were themselves promptly reduced to around half (30~M in cuts instead of 70M) In effect, they had their budget increased compared to everything else which is cratering (remember, global crises (plural)). They still maintain a stranglehold on the general fund. Also the new regime, elected Nov, ran on bolstering the police and driving out/down homelessness.

The reason police are having staffing issues is because everyone is having staffing issues, also a huge proportion of police, compared to any other profession, quit their jobs because of vaccine mandates. THATs why we are having these problems. COVID in general, and idiots refusing to vaccinate.

https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/washington/articles/2021-11-23/city-council-cuts-seattle-police-budget-drawing-criticism

Their budget was cut... by about 2%. They aren't short on detectives because of funding shortages, it's because a bunch of their force quite/retired the past couple years and no one wants to work for them.

The new budget includes funds for 1,357 officers and SPD says right now, there are 1,120 officers on the forcewhich leaves 237 open jobs.

They don't do their jobs right now despite having more funding than basically any other sector in basically any locality.

And Seattle PD wasn't actually "defunded" in any way that should mean they have to sacrifice investigating rape cases.

Police fanboys are the exact same people who say we need to slash funding to schools because they aren't doing their jobs despite all the money (lol) they have. They also say giving the government more money just means they line their pockets more and nothing changes. What makes police departments different?

They got a 2% cut at most. Shut the fuck up. Cops don't do their jobs regardless of funding. Just ask the parents of the dead children in Uvalde.

I dont know if its because theyre defunded, after 2020. Nobody wants to be a cop anymore. I saw a picture of Chicago police went from 500 hired in 2019 to double digits this year.

My squad of 10 is currently staffed at 7, one guy quit during 2020, another guy retired, and one guy found out he had Parkinsons and was forced to retire. Its been a two years and we havent replaced a single slot on our squad. I was out for 8 months from my car accident. So they had a minimum of 6 people. Our other squad didnt have a sergeant for almost a year. As soon as I get my bachelors in hopefully film study, Im dipping too most likely

If only they hated being cops because of the bad apples, and not because they had to get vaccines and sort of face some backlash for their improprieties.

It was much larger, it was just that the cuts were mostly closing job openings and not actually removing money from what was there.

I legit saw a facebook post from a cop "totally not defending what they did, but...." the Texas cops not going into the school because.... yep... you guessed it.... Michael Brown....

Apparently after that whole thing, cops just are super duper afraid to do their jobs because the mean ol public and media will criticize anything they do and now they're trained to de-escalate things, and play basketball with kids, and give people hugs instead of just shooting them.

If cops didn't wanted to be hated so much nor put under so much scrutiny then maybe they should stop doing such heinous and illegal shit.

Oh wait, that's just too hard. Better just blame the media and the left. Cops are basically extorting people. "Stop criticizing us and stop punishing us for wrongdoing or else we're not going to do any policing anymore!".

Some excerpts. I did the bolding for emphasis.

Not for nothing, clearance rates have dropped to all-time lows at the same time that police budgets have swollen to all-time highs, suggesting that more funding has actually resulted in police being less effective. It is a great public mismatch in understanding, training, and expectations, Baughman told me. Increases in police officers or police budgets have not been shown to reduce crime or make us safer.

To make matters worse, clearance rates can be easily manipulated and are not synonymous with actually solving crimes, just with making arrests. That means that those rock-bottom numbers are actually skewing reality in favor of cops, who are arresting the rightful perpetrator of a crime at rates even lower than those at which theyre clearing cases. All they tell us is whether there has been an arrest made in a case, Baughman said, not whether that person is actually the one that committed the crime or is eventually convicted of the crime Thats why I think convictions are a better measure of whether the crime was actually cleared.

Since the 2020 Black Lives Matter demonstrations called for police budgets to be defunded, not a single major American city has slashed its police funding. In fact, almost all of them have ballooned spending on police forces. Repeatedly, President Biden has encouraged increased spending on police, recently calling on municipalities to direct their unspent COVID aid toward adding even more cops. The Biden administration requested $388 million in grant funding for police hiring in its 2022 budget proposal, more than double the top figure requested by the Trump administration. New York City even elected a former cop as its mayor, who just a few days ago announced a new PR campaign in support of cops and against the defund the police movement.
None of those moves have grappled with the historical ineffectiveness of current-day policing, or why police forces have been unable to convert generous budgets into effective crime-solving activities. There are a number of factors that go into explaining the collapse in clearance rates, including a lack of trust among communities with the police forces that serve them.

This is 100% accurate, one of my friend was basically told as much when she called them about someone harassing her at work. It's very much some childish, petty shit....execpt children don't usually get guns and most people don't expect protection from them.

In other words, it has everything to do with that. It's their fault that they get hate and their responsibility to fix it. Not to mention just the general distrust in authority that has existed since time immemorial.

And stress is literally part of the job. They are supposed to serve the public selflessly and deal with the worst people and most dangerous situations in our society. I'm not a firefighter because I would never throw myself into a burning building. Someone has to be paid to take on that stress and is also mandatory that we hold such people to a very high standard if they are to be given the tools to handle such threats.

No one should be forced to keep a job they don't want to do, so I agree with them choosing to leave if they can't take it. I can relate to that much
