Think 'work from home' might stick around simply because people can't afford to drive to work?

It should stick around so people don't have to make that consideration, but a whole lot of companies don't trust their employees to get work done without somebody hovering over them, so they resist the idea. Having fewer people commuting everyday would be overwhelmingly a good thing in pretty much every way, but corporate America isn't exactly big on changing to benefit others.

It is funny because my office is fully embracing the remote work.

I won't name the company (it is not a "big tech", but is a multi-billion dollar company), but they had 12 offices in my city (and one in India) pre-covid. Now they have closed all the rented office space, and are in the process of closing a few of the offices they actually own. Technology (which is the biggest department of the company) is only going to have two office buildings, when they originally had 6. My team is the first 100% remote team, as all of our members are located in different cities/states. They even opened up the hiring process to across the country with the expectation that all new Software Engineers are going to be fully remote.

I'm in the same boat. I work for the Canadian federal government, and my branch is in the process of transitioning from our traditional office space (which has been mostly empty since March 2020) into a touch-down space with non-assigned workstations and other design elements that aim to accommodate people coming into the office occasionally instead of every day. Personally, I'm a big fan of the whole thing. I'm still going in more frequently than most of my colleagues, given the nature of my work, but I'm really appreciating being able to skip the commute most days and the extra flexibility in my schedule (to say nothing of being able to swap to my personal computer if things are slow). Further streamlining my occasional visit and cutting down on the amount of office space we rent will be great.

Of course, I very rarely drove to work even before the pandemic and the shift to remote work (it's within easy biking distance, reasonable walking distance, and on a couple major bus routes that I can access easily), simply because parking downtown sucks, so my commute wouldn't be appreciably affected by gas prices going up anyway. But that's just me.

The day my job mandates coming into the office is the day I quit.

It always feels slightly weird to complain about gas prices when you realize that Europeans have been paying closer to $8-10 a gallon for decades. Or that $4 a gallon is still cheaper than milk or soda.

But yeah, prices are obviously higher than they've been before. I still remember when I first started driving and gas was less than a dollar.
The lifetime breakdown of driving your car shows it to be even more silly.

For example, my car is a 2009, and has about $158k miles on it. While the it's max threshold is about ~420 miles before filling up, 375 per fill-up is more realistic.

This means I've filled up my car ~421 time, and using a $3/gallon estimate (filling up about to 13 gallons, so $39 a fill up), means $16,419 worth of money on gas spent. Or about $1,263, or $105/month, which I guarantee you everyone blows on Door Dash or whatnot more these days.

What's worse, is I actually got the car used in 2011, with 33k miles already on it, so my personal lifetime is closer to $13k flat, or about $95.50 a year.

THAT said, if one does plan on keeping a car that long, it definitely means most EVs will save you in the long run on gas along (never mind the other mechanical bills to upkeep combustion cars).

I love how people blame the President for the gas prices instead of the oil companies.

Nobody has to call them President. There's nothing wrong with just using the name.

Is there something wrong with calling them President, though?
