Yeah this is one of those things where like, I know I'm overpaying on taxes every year, government thanks you for your interest free loan, etc., but knowing I'll have about a grand come in every year is a lot better of a feeling then having a grand go out every year.

A smart person would have invested the $1,000 and earned interest on it instead of letting the government have it for free.

In 2020 I made a 1000% return on Tesla, so an extra $1,000 in cash means I would have made $10,000 profit.

Also, the difference between getting back $1,000 and owing $1,000 is $2,000 which means that my $2,000 would have been $20,000 in profit from investing.

yeah I spent the last ~5-6 years trying to perfect it so I owe nothing and get nothing but always end up owing a few hundred bucks (though its gotten lower each year, first time was like $900) so this year my wife and I both got new jobs and we decided fuck it were just gonna have the default withholding status and get a refund.

I probably owe a lot too, but I get and W2 and 1099 and can do some expense deductions (all legit) to lower it bit

The people that owe, do you not have much taken out each month of you checks or something?

Just curious as to what makes someone have to pay them, unless it's like your working for yourself.

Hell, even if you DONT invest the money, inflation is literally around 10% right now Basic math tells you that 10% of $1,000 is $100 which means that you PAID the government $100 this year to hold your money.

You would have been better off spending that money on booze or any other consumable item because inflation decreases the value of your money whether you spend it or not.

If you ever care to come back to live in the US your tax debt in interest and late fees is going to shoot your balance to the stratosphere. You may not think you're coming back at the time, but make sure you don't because if you do, you'll be paying for that shit until death and beyond.

If you get a traditional paycheck from your employer and nothing else sure, but that doesnt account for investments, stimulus checks, self-employment...
