I already commented on the other thing in the other topic. Not in any depth. But her situation doesn't really feel like it's something where I should be the defining opinion lol

The tweet is saying she wished Nora was in fact sorry and expressed as much. Instead of trying to excuse herself.

I think that I didn't put too much thought into her "Blackcent" because where I'm from (Sacramento), there's a lot of intermingling of black and Asian people, where the Asian people live in similar conditions as black people.

but if this just a case of her manufacturing that identity, without living that kinda life, then I view it as more of a mockery that she profited off of.

That being said, I can accept your perspective as much as my own theory and I never meant my comment to blow up and look bigger than it was. I don't actually know this woman and Im not gonna judge her off one tweet regardless. That was just how I read it and there are genuinely people, even if not her, that do just want that apology to feel like they got the person to do that.

That is again not what is happening, and it's astounding that you are twisting things that way. There is literally nothing happening here that should make you think they want her to be a completely different person, nor is there anything here that would suggest to you that people aren't dealing with the reality of who Nora is. Considering they are literally talking about the reality of who she actually is.

Awkwafina could have just said: "You were right. I did use a blaccent to make a name for myself and that was wrong. I wholeheartedly apologize, and I'll do better from now on."

See but the thing is, that is not true. If she admits that it was wrong then she would be declaring that she built her success by stepping on top of exploited people, and therefore twitter would call even more for the end of her career under the idea that it was unearned or stolen.

The most business savvy decision would probably have been to never acknowledge it.

She was born in a very wealthy, mostly-white suburb in Long Island and spent a few years in Queens. Her fake AAVE accent sounds absolutely nothing like how anybody in the Tri-State area talks.

What I'm saying is that it comes off not only as cringy but mockingly. Especially since a lot of us have basically been mocked for it all our lives.

As for Awkwafina, she went to school with my friends at LaGuardia and Albany and she's from Forest Hills and Stony Brook (which is one of the weirdest areas I've ever been to once you go past Stony Brook University).

It's not really the hood like Jamaica or even Hempstead in Long Island, but I do kind of get her picking it up on it a little just by being in Queens and especially Flushing, which had a huge gang culture back in the days, including Asian gangs.

However, she was using it full-time in acting and adding unnecessary inflections or exaggerations, which is not her just picking it up and didn't sound natural.

Speaking with a particular vocabulary is generally a neutral action. When you say racial slurs or directly insult or mistreat somebody based on race, it's a lot easier to understand the intent. If a person is using vernacular of one type or another, it is unfair to assume that they are doing so for improper reasons.

I tend to draw the line at assuming the nature of somebody's intent when they use certain words, unless it's abundantly clear that they are doing so in a mocking, insulting, or harmful way.

Except if you're saying it comes off "mockingly" then you are assuming that the speaker's intent is to mock. I don't think that's fair or reasonable in most scenarios. People can choose the vocabulary and pronunciations that they prefer.
