Whoopi Goldberg was suspended from ABCs The View Tuesday evening after she claimed the Holocaust was not about race. Effective immediately, I am suspending Whoopi Goldberg for her wrong and hurtful comments, ABC News President Kim Godwin tweeted. While Whoopi has apologized, Ive asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments. Goldberg, 66, claimed Nazis and Jews were both white on Mondays program, and repeated the statement on Late Night With Steven Colbert that evening. She walked back the remarks on Twitter later that night amid widespread outrage. As Jonathan Greenblatt from the Anti-Defamation League shared, The Holocaust was about the Nazis systematic annihilation of the Jewish people who they deemed to be an inferior race. I stand corrected, she wrote.Her suspension from the talk show came as some ABC insiders insisted that her apology wasnt enough and demanded she be fired.

So I tried looking up her original comments and it seems like such an odd splitting of hairs.

She claimed it was about "man's inhumanity to man". Which is one way to look at it from a much broader sense. But that inhumane treatment is inextricably linked to race. You can't really talk about "inhumanity" without recognizing why and how those atrocities were motivated and justified by the agressors.

It'd be like saying the transatlantic slave trade wasn't about race.

Everything we've learned about the Holocaust for the last 20 years or so has been kind of suggesting that 6 million is kind of a conservative estimate and there's evidence pointing to as high as 10 million. But also shit like this is why I don't like to talk about numbers when it comes to the Holocaust. Not only is any number I can throw out probably wrong and likely much worse, but talking about it like it was the death toll of an earthquake or COVID or something is dehumanizing in the opposite direction, making the Nazis sound like a natural disaster rather than people themselves who are still here and would do it again given the chance and the victims as people who died because of happenstance or bad luck.

6 million people dead is "wow that's terrible"

You know, at first I was going to give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she was referring to the fact more than just Jews were killed during the Holocaust (since they killed many groups) which, I mean, not a great take, but whatever.
