Threads of fate had some of the worst of these.

But then you hear the soundtrack for Dewprism forest and all is forgiven.

As long as the game makes it known that you can't win it and/or they restore your resources afterwards, it's fine.

I've had this happen to me PLUS a 2nd form that you have to fight right after the form that you're already overwhelmed by.

In Chrono Trigger there were more than one "unwinnable" matches but if you won it actually affected the ending.
What an awesome game.

Going off of that, the 1st fight being so tough you assume it's the Final Battle and waste all of your resources, only to realize there's 1-2 whole phases after that.

I like when you can win them and get a reward for it. Even if the story scene is the same.

This is the best way to go. Make it something just above theoretically possible, and reward those who persist.

Well, you don't HAVE to lose to him. You can actually beat him and unlock the post game modes, so it's less like this where you're scripted to be unable to win.
Like I said, you have to lose to him to finish the mission, otherwise you get the hidden ending and have to do the mission over, so in principle it's still the same thing.

One of my faves is Dragon Age origins

There's a really hard fight at the end of a mandatory story quest.

You're supposed to lose (the game even gives you the option to surrender) and then you get thrown in prison and either have to escape yourself or be rescued by your friends

That's obviously what the devs intended

But you can just win the fight and skip the entire prison section.

Bioware put a lot of (quite funny) dialogue and effort into a quest you can just not do instead of just having a cutscene where you all die

I appreciate that

What about if its unwinnable but you have to wait for the story segment to kick in and have to last a set number of minutes

what about a boss fight that is designed for you to lose, but gives you a chance to win? in the cutscene afterwards they just play it off like "is that all you got? no? well shit". the fight itself is extremely tough but can be overcome

Suikoden 2

Rowd

You can win the fight but it's very difficult. Like not worth it kind of difficult. Scene afterwards changes too, but the story doesn't change.

Came to say that. Only time it didn't bother me was street fighter V. Reason being is normally it would have you play whoever won. Even if the villain. So the one time they didn't I figured it was to display she was a more skilled fighter but just didn't have the strength to really phase him. And I don't think think lost either iirc it was kind of a stalemate as far as the fight went.

I like how Trails does it. You are supposed to lose, but you get rewards if you "win" and when you win the cutscene still has you lose since the enemy you are fighting are supposed to be a lot stronger than you are at the point you are facing them. Or there are ones where you need to just survive, or injure the enemies to a certain point like bring them down to 70% health.

I mentioned that Xenoblade 2 does this a lot earlier and its very annoying as its most of the boss fights in the first half of the game.

Yea, them being winnable offers a fun challenge for players interested. But if not are just a waste of time

Even ones where you win the battle, but lose story wise still. Just have them fight something or something else and then lose afterward.

Its why I never waste elixirs or valuable battle items until the superboss, because you never know if it's a scripted battle or not

Only time I can think of not minding unwinnable battles is thr few times they at least make out like you where whooping them so they busted out a desperation attack and managed to take you down.

Not sure if the case but my mind goes to Kuja and Ultima. It didn't seem like you where beating him per say more like Kuja going oh this is actually starting to sting a little let's end this

Could be bias though as I find Kuja one of the most bad ass FF villains cause iirc he never suffers a true loss in battle against Zidane and company.
