Funny game.

It is hard to take Donte and anything he does seriously when the director plastered his ugly mug on him. It really makes every scene so cringey and even if you get past that the plot itself is nothing noteworthy.

The gameplay is really good and was an enjoyable experience but the story and character redesigns hurts it so much and since we are judging the story it gets the lowest score possible in my book for the director's ego trip that made everything look bad and killed the game in cold blood before it even released.

For the record, my 2.5 is me being generous and assuming how I would've felt if I played the game with zero context of classic DMC

We're really hitting the sub-5s hard this week.

At least no one so far has gotten sore about the game getting good reviews from critics.

7.5/10. Its a parody. The whole thing is not supposed to be taken seriously. And frankly if you go into it as an extra-absurd send-up of overly dramatic action games it works.

Yeah TBH I'm sick and tired of the whole audience vs. critics mentality. They have always been a very broad guideline at best and nothing more, but also nothing less.

I'm also just personally fascinated by the whole fiasco surrounding this game, especially considering it was greenlit on Keiji Inafune's watch (lol) and seemingly went out of its way to alienate original series fans while attempting to chase a new audience who didn't care. Stupid GamesRadar argued that old Dante would have been laughed at had he debuted in 2013 instead of 2001 - even if that's true, it completely ignores the original built up fans who were into that stuff and would have gladly paid for more of it. As Devil May Cry 5 would go on to prove.

That was not an invitation to rant even more about how you care too much about content for media you've never consumed

The writing isnt bad though. It is actively mocking what it is often read as being. Its the Last Action Hero problem, people didnt realise it was a parody and thought it was a trashy action movie.

So first of all it's clearly not a parody lol. That's the biggest piece of revisionist history ever. Last Action Hero that was literally the premise of the movie so people who don't get that that's the point are missing something.

That being said, on the Last Action Hero line of thinking, even if it was intentional that doesn't mean you have to like it either. Something can be artist vision and can be annoying at the same time. Correctly executing crap just means someone had a bad idea and is often worse than poorly executing a good idea.

2/10. I give it a smidge of credit for being ironically amusing in some places and being memorable at least, but man is it cringey at times.

I mean if anything DMC (the real series with white haired Dante) is the parody of the action genre with all of the completely over the top action, really.

And I say that with all the love in my heart. You can sense it's actively trying to be silly in places, and that's part of the charm.

DmC you can mistakenly think it's trying to be bad writing, but what is bad writing with dialogue that feels like a 14 year old who just watched his first batch of R rated movies wrote it, what is that a parody of? Is it a parody of fiction as a whole? I don't get it.

This game was not at all written to be a parody and multiple interviews with the cast and director prove this. The girl who plays Lilith literally called the script Shakespearean.

"The writing sucks so I'm going to pretend it was just a joke" doesn't fly.

Definitely a massive stretch to call it a parody considering how seriously Tameem and Ninja Theory were presenting it.

I have no idea what games I've already rated, unfortunately.

I would say that a parody that can't easily be distinguished from the thing it's parodying was probably not successful at what it set out to do.
