I will never understand why we eat such a boring food as the main dish on a holiday we celebrate by eating.

That said this will hopefully be the most normal Thanksgiving I've had since 2018. My grandpa died on Thanksgiving 2019 and then last year was uhh...last year.

I mean gravy and stuffing are delicious so I'm not sure what the issue is with combining them

You are cooking it incorrectly.

Stuffing is a side that should not be cooked in the turkey. Gravy is for mashed potatoes.

I just ate some turkey at my parents' house. My dad used a grill (I think it's gas, but he mentioned charcoal), and the bird came out tasty. It's all down to the preparation.

No one is cooking stuffing in the turkey here..

That was my dads side of the family turkey way back when his mom was still alive to cook and it sucked even more.

Turkey only comes out dry if the person cooking it doesn't really know what they're doing. It also doesn't have to be bland - that is once again a sign of lacking skill in the cooking department.

A lot of the things people think they know about cooking turkey is wrong. You should never stuff it or baste it. You should also look into marinades and seasonings for turkey. People tend not to since it's such a big bird, but you can add flavor. Also, as pointed out, dark meat, people. It always tastes better than the white meat.

As a non-American but someone who has turkey in typical rotation for evening meals with several other meats... I'm inclined to agree with OP. Can Turkey be good? Sure, but pretty much any other meat I've had is better on average.

"It depends on how you prepare it" feels irrelevant, because you can say that about pretty much any food. What I know is that the best turkey dish I've ever had doesn't hold a candle to the best pork/beef/lamb/chicken dish I've had.

"it depends on how you prepare it" is a direct refutation of the universally stated and contentious statement that it's "bland and dry". They aren't using that statement (at least not solely) to argue that it's the best meat

It might feel irrelevant to you as a non-American, but certain cooking techniques that have been passed down as family tradition are cause for the bad turkey. Put aside the bland part, turkey shouldn't be coming out dry. When it does it's because it was cooked wrong, just like mom/grandma/g.grandma etc did it. The turkey I had this year was anything but dry and bland.

This was fine back when buffets were typically a good deal to make you spend money gambling at a casino.

But now buffets are all expensive. Eat the premium items.

Also was a bit premature on calling this normal. We're down to about 25% of the usual crowd we'd have here.

Also my aunts turkey was especially dry and the stuffing was too dry to compensate.

Luckily my dad is an asshole but he cooks a good ham.

No but the early golden corrals used to suck. First one I went to was in Arizona way back and the food was below Hometown Buffet level.

Then they opened up some here and they were amazing. The one in Arizona still sucks, so it can vary.

An actual premium buffet can be found at a casino or some hotels. They'll have all sorts of actually "premium" food, and usually a lot of seafood and decent cuts of meat.

A well-prepared turkey is pretty good, though. Any meat prepared improperly is going to be dry. Probably overcooked.

This. You need to add/do some much to light meat just to get it decent, but you can half-ass dark and it's still good.
