Vaccines train up your immune system to prevent hospitalization/permanent damage/death, and depending on the individual vaccine, it may be efficacious enough to render the given disease toothless, incapable of causing symptoms or spreading. They are supposed to be used in conjunction with each other. What this means is that vaccines don't prevent you from getting infected, but depending upon your immune system, the vaccine, and the individual disease, a vaccine will at the least give you a far better chance at surviving/avoiding hospitalization, or it may confer enough of a bolstering to your system that you barely have symptoms but you may or may not still be a vector, or at best it may result in your immune system being so effective that it destroys the invasive agent before you even develop symptoms or become a vector. Even in the weakest case scenario, you should still get vaccinated simply because it reduces the chance that the disease will wrack your body to the point of causing hospitalization/permanent damage/death, but even just taking that into account, getting vaccinated also protects others because it results in less overburdening of our medical systems.
