Do you split the bill evenly or pay only for what you ordered?

I will pay if I invite others but if I'm invited, I'm paying for what I ate only , no regrets.

but real talk last few times i've went to a restaurant with >3 people the server has asked who's on which ticket when taking the orders, so in this situation we would have already specified we're all separate

I was out to dinner with some people once and a lady tried telling the waiter it was all one bill... the same lady who ordered a 240 dollar bottle of wine that was literally half the bill.

I think it was 6 of us. Everyone else spent about 40 and besides a couple people having a small taste she polished that bottle off herself.

Later on I heard she was bitching about everyone there for putting her on the spot in front of the waitress. Lol

I dont drink so I can't imagine a bill where my sole total gets anywhere near $100. I dont think we even have a restaurant that fancy in my city.

It would largely depend on how much my share was. If I just ordered a middle of the road steak (maybe topping off at 40, 45ish with a soda) I'm not going to want to put in an even share just people one or more others went overboard. If I got an appetizer and/or desert then I'd probably be ok with it though.

Realistically I wouldn't be in a position to go somewhere that expensive since I can't afford it.

This. And why would they, especially if they are your friends, want you to pay for more or less than what you actually ate/drank anyways? I find expecting the group to split it evenly to be rude, unless its like, close family or friends youre treating out or something.

It really depends on the margins and who you're with though. Between good friends I'd let 25 slide for the ease of paying, because i known theyd get me back over the rest of the night or the next time we go out etc.

I'm kinda surprised how many people say they're itemizing the bill and only paying their share.

Whenever I go out and the bill comes, each person or couple just throw their debit card on the bill and ask the server to split it evenly between each card.

Every so often one couple will insist on paying more, because of what they ordered (more expensive dish, more alcohol, etc.), and at worst, we'll just agree to have them pay the tip.

Honestly, If you're going somewhere where it's coming out to $100 a head, you're probably not fighting about evenly paying $100 instead of the $60 your share of the meal was.

Splitting a bill should be an issue, but asking a server to itemize the bill, especially after the meal was served, it kinda rude.

You're basically asking the server to recall who ordered every item that they basically served you 20+ minutes ago.

I guess for my particular circle of friends, the thought process is "we're going out and most likely spending $100ish a couple, so if it's $80 or $120, it's not a big deal ".

We're also not the kind of group where one couple orders two double lobster tail meals and 6 rounds of drinks, and another couple splits a salad and just drinks water. We're usually all ordering around the same stuff, value-wise.

And if that did happen, none of us are rude enough to expect the salad couple to evenly split the bill. And we'd also insist to pay more if we were the lobster couple.

It's pretty standard practice to keep track of which seat at the table ordered what, that's how they make sure everyone gets what they ordered

Right.

But when you're also ordering multiple rounds of drinks, possibly changing your drink order every round. Or ordering a bottle that two couples split, and then asking the server to itemize your bill after that fact, it just a shitty thing to do.

If you know you're going to ask for an itemized bill, the courteous thing to do is tell the server beforehand, so they can maintain separate bills the entire time, as it's usually entered into a POS system as you order.

You've never been to a restaurant that as a separate server and food runner? Where the person beings your food not knowing who ordered what, and going "OK, I have the shrimp tacos with no pico" and you have to tell them who order each dish?

Depends on how evenly people's orders are. If someone ordered $150 worth of food and someone else ordered $40 or something, I would vote for everyone paying for themselves. I personally don't mind splitting but I can't assume everyone else feels the same way

I guess you're right, I have seen that. But the server still generally writes down which seat ordered what, and it's usually the server who asks how the bill is divided

Where did you pull these numbers from, TC? Who orders a $100 meal? Even if you go someplace especially snooty, you'd likely top out at $50 per person. And if you are going to someplace so ridiculously expensive that people are getting $100 plates, at that point it becomes kind of tacky to split the bill.
It can easily build to $100pp once drinks are involved.

But you're right, if you're looking at a bill that's hovering around $100pp, you're probably not the kind of person that's going to squabble over paying $100 when your share was only $80.

assuming all tabs are in the 80-120 range, there's one bill and everyone just throws their credit card as we split evenly

If there's a disparity (one non drinker, e.g.) then, yeah, we either get the bill split. If it's a busy place we'll just call for one bill and venmo our share.

Depends on the situation, if I invited everyone out which I normally do with my friends, then I'm paying the entire bill and if you want to contribute to the tip that's fine. But if it's a mutual thing then I'm paying for what I ordered. It's pretty cut and dry

To be fair, if I'm at a restaurant that's costing $100pp either I'm on a fancy date and her or I are paying the full thing, or I'm out with colleagues and the company is picking up the tab.

That said, when I'm out with friends we split the bill based on what we ordered. That's just normal in Canada/US. Maybe it's different in other countries, IDK.

Same.

I've always assumed that was the "normal" thing to do.

Either split it evenly, or divvy it up if you know someone ordered way more/less than they others.

But if everyone is within $10-$20 of each other, just split it evenly.
