So you completely missed the part where the trans community came down hard on his trans friend because she supported and defended Dave's humor, then she killed herself because of the trans community? Clearly Dave's comedy isn't the problem, instead it's misplaced hatred.

They crashed a business meeting. If I did that at my job, I'd probably be fired as well. That's not normal employee behavior. People paid to watch Chapelle tell jokes. I'm sure you can spot the difference here

she's been reinstated after the company admitted that a director outright shared the zoom meeting id with employees

it's pretty clear there was either some severe miscommunication at very convenient timing, or the meeting thing was pretext to try to get her fired for her public views

And either way, it's not appropriate to bring up politics during a business meeting

I think the outrage is a little overblown. Maybe he's a little ignorant, but obviously he's not trying to be malicious or a transphobe. I remember when this happened to Ricky Gervais after the Golden Globes, and then he did a Netflix special doubling down on what got him in "trouble" the first time. Watch his special called Humanity.

Seems the groups of people he's offending are the exact type of people that would be offended by anything and everything. So good on him for not giving a F about it all. Lol what a knee jerk emotional reaction. Dave Chapelle didn't de-value anyone's life. And you have no idea what was said in this business meeting or what the meeting was even about. It sounds like whatever they said, it was not the time or the place. You're supposed to generally display some form of etiquette in business meetings. It's not necessarily a platform for you to air all of your grievances

I wonder how many of you would still use "but it's comedy" excuse you all seem to fall back on. Obviously less people care because there are less trans people in the world, and transphobia is so ingrained and widespread. That doesn't mean it isn't bigotry or hate speech just because it's a group you either don't know a lot about, or have your own bias against said group.

A 3 to you could be significantly higher to someone more invested in the offending topic

Here's the issue with Chappelle's whole spiel on trans issues: he's trying to play both sides of the coin ("I have a trans friend who died! Here's some jokes at the expense of the trans community") while simultaneously downplaying the adversity those in the LGBTQ community face ("Trans people have it bad, sure. But black people have it worse!")

I don't think he needs to apologize or anything, but he could take some constructive criticism and make more of an efffort crafting his jokes. Be less dismissive of LGBTQ folks. It's lazy and sad because he's using the same argument a lot of closet racists use ("I can't be racist, I have a black friend!" Chappelle: "I had a trans friend, so it's cool for me to shit on Caitlyn Jenner")

That's lazy. He's one of the smartest and most prolific stand-ups of his generation. He can do better.

I can understand the feminist perspective on this though as well. A lot of women are still struggling with their rights as well in regard to abortion as well as many other issues. There is, by and large, clearly an issue with how many men treat women and how that can have an impact on quality of life. I can see how feminists might be angry that Bruce Jenner can transition and immediately win woman of the year for example.

But still, at the end of the day, this is comedy and I really don't think Dave Chapelle hates trans people or that everything he says is meant to be taken literally or even seriously. I think the Rowling thing was less of a jab at the trans community and more of just "she shouldn't have her career ruined" for being a radical feminist

I can also agree to all of this. I think I mentioned earlier in the topic that I really didn't find his trans-targeted jokes all that amusing. The jokes directed at the gay community were a lot funnier. Even my gay coworker was talking about how hilarious it was (not trying to use this as a "I have a gay friend" argument)

That and I think he's at the end of his Netflix contract and maybe was just mailing it in?

Some comedians take years building a 45-60 minute set, and how many years has it been since Chappelle started cranking out these specials? 6 specials in what, 5 years? I'm sure he's capable of writing top-notch material but I'm wondering if maybe he stretched himself too thin
