I'm like 27 episodes in

I was willing to believe L is like a batman sort of genius detective

But now he comes from a whole orphanage of genius kid detectives lol

Are mellow and near going to dragonball fusion together and reveal they're actually L. It wouldn't surprise me at this point.

Is the ending decent at least?

The actual ending is very fitting for the series. The lead-up to it is...disappointing, at best.

L's death is where things took a drastic turn for the worse. The story got much more convoluted and silly after that. And the reason for why things end the way they end is really silly, too.

2nd half the series isn't horrible, but it's horrible compared to the first half. It's not enough to not recommend the series, but it's certainly a bummer that the author couldn't stick the landing.

They condense the shit out of the Mello/Near arc unfortunately in the anime. L and Mello/Near each take about half the manga, but L was so popular that when they adapted the anime they put all the focus there, giving the L arc about twice as much time as the Mello/Near arc. So it is pretty convoluted, and hard to care about the characters as much.

I thought the final episode was great though, very satisfying ending

It gets really stupid when Light loses his memory because everything that transpired in that arc went according to "his plan".

But I get it, it's shonen and I applaud the Mangaka's at the time for doing something different when everyone was making battle shonen's.

Most people are referring to the first part with L. It's not uncommon for somebody to suggest to a new viewer that they stop watching after episode 25.

Mellow and near vs light are nowhere near as interesting as L vs light. The issue is exasperated in the anime.

If you are looking for them to do some awesome L style takedown you are out of luck. They aren't kidding around when they say they aren't as good as L.

They don't win. Not in the anime or manga. Light loses. He absolutely sabatoges himself.

However, if you are interested in one of the most epic and spectacular dude who thinks he's so fucking clever but actually isn't self owns in entertainment history, the ending is definitely worth it.

To be fair, that was mostly to goad Kira into trying to kill him to see how much information about a person Kira needed in order to kill them. He was able to confirm that Kira needed an identity in order to kill. Also why did this need to be spoilered, this is 2nd episode stuff.

The ending is worth it but the second half really brought the rest of the show down in my opinion. It should have ended after L. I liked the way the (live action) Japanese movies did it. L writes his own name in the book to avoid being killed.

He would have still lost. Mikami wrote every name but Light's on the fake note. That identified Light as Kira.
