Gonna be three more specials in 2022 and then bye.

Like I wanted this era to be good, but it just... wasn't... to me.

It isnt even that Jodie Whittaker is bad; she is actually quite good...

It's the fact that Chibnall's writing and stories are terrible when he has control. No good direction, no well written characters, nada.

Whittaker wasn't the problem - Chris Chibnall was. But now we're both leaving we'll never get to see what Jodie Whittaker could be like with good writers.

The Colin Baker situation of the modern era.

That's fair enough. I haven't seen her in anything else, to be fair, so my first judgement on her as an actress is the series.

A bad director can make a good actor look terrible, especially in a TV series.

Not really. Jodie just got a Colin Baker style screwjob from the terrible writing.

New Who is just an overall screwjob for the actors anyway. "Three" series (and random specials) stretched out over five or six years, and pretty much locked in exclusively over that span. Contrast with Tom Baker, who's seven seasons was more or less seven actual years.

Yeah, like I said, I was judging based on what I saw. But bad directing can ruin good stuff, so that's my bad if she actually has talent that was just squandered.

The "lore" completely allows repeats now.
Sneaking in a half-season of "Curator" episodes would be great, and better hurry the hell up while Tom is still alive.
Or, bring in Sean Pertwee as a third-doctor revisit.

This is not remotely out of tune for any given new showrunner.

Davies did it. Moffat did it a lot.

Yeah, Jodie was great. Just an issue with the writing.

It's not even like the stories and concepts weren't good (notable exception: the master's return). It was just the execution. Not spending enough time on the stories. The build up was often very good, but then the reluctance to run with multi-episode arcs means that each one concluded in an anti-climatic asspull in the last 3 minutes of the episode.

Ehhh, it was going fine till the last episode of last season where they did some half-assed "opening up the Marvel multiverse* shit by making the Doctor some eternal being that came here as a kid from another dimension and found by some psycho who used the Doctor's powers to create the Time Lords. Along with the Doctor having tons and tons of previous cycles before the 1st Doctor and basically now having unlimited regenerations.

That was just dropping the ball and I wouldn't be surprised he was kicked. There were already rumors going around back then that Jodie is leaving. They probably coincided kicking him as she was leaving any way.

Even then, I actually really enjoyed the Fugitive Doctor from him and hope she returns for a bit.

also a long-time series staple.

The problem is that the show is trying to bludgeon a lesson into our heads. Yes, that's also a series staple, but it was usually a brief moralization monologue sometime in the middle of episode 3 of a four-parter.
Incidentally, the insistence on "themed" lessons is a large part of what made the Colin era a disaster. Chibnal doesn't even bother with allegory though.

Ehh, yes and no. There was far more conflict development in the past episodes. In these episodes, the moment anything is revealed about what's going on, they had the doctor just immediately wave her magic wand and the issue is solved.

Jodie leaving has been an open secret for a long time.

Thank fuck Chibnall is going, too, though.

My only worry is that, with how hard it apparently was to find a replacement showrunner when Moffat left, they may struggle even more now given that the show's stock has definitely plummeted over recent years - especially since the new team's first job will likely be the 60th anniversary celebration, which would be a baptism of fire.

With falling ratings, far more negative fan reception and the sporadic scheduling keeping it from the public eye all meaning that the show isn't the cornerstone of BBC1 that it used to be, I'm a bit paranoid that they may use this as an excuse to quietly retire the series if a new production team proves too tricky to put together.

But that's probably (hopefully?) just the part of me that remembers the 89 cancellation talking.

To add, I have no problem with Jodie as an actress, she's actually been very good in everything else I've seen her in.

She was just horribly mismanaged in Who. The Doctor felt like just part of the ensemble in both her seasons so far rather than the main character (I'd say that Bradley Walsh felt like the lead in Jodie's first season, actually, and in the second - even though they weren't in it much - Sacha Dhawan and Jo Martin absolutely stole Jodie's thunder).

Weirdly, for me the time when she was at her Doctoriest, and the only time that she felt like the actual star of the franchise, was when she put on the coat and made a quick video from her bedroom cupboard to reassure all the kids at home who were scared when the pandemic started. She was actually brilliant there.

Like Trelve says, she got Colin'd. Here's hoping her Big Finish stuff ends up as good as his.

Well it's about damn time. People can blame everything on Chibnall and the writing all they want, but she did absolutely nothing memorable. There was nothing worth watching for with her acting. People can say she is so great in all this other stuff, but that means nothing to me when she sucks in Doctor Who.

Ironically the one episode I actually somewhat liked the most from this era is one that I think most everyone else hates.
